A check valve has been put on the hot to the mixer tap and has solved the problem, the hot water now takes about 10 secs to come out of the mixer when tap opened - why? What is the purpose of the nut on the check valve?

I have been asked to fit a frost thermostat for piece of mind I think as it is a second property. I assume if I ask at the merchants they will know which one to supply for a specific boiler, correct? Do we need to get an electrician to wire them in? Are they easy to install?
