    Mains Smoke alarms

This is why you wouldn't normally have a smoke detector in a kitchen. Mine are in the hallways, can still one off when doing bacon! I do like my crispy! :D

    Round holes in glass

'Fraid I chickened out the last time we had to install a fan in one of the loos, took out the (single glazed) window and replaced with a bit of marine ply, jigsawed a circle and went from there. Now the entire window has been replaced with a tilt and turn double glazed window, so just open...

    Central Heating Repair Costs

Er, NO! An hour's labour, about £25-50 tops, materials, another £50 perhaps, £75-100 I would have said.

    Dodgy phone calls

That's neat xxxxxrich, thanks for that one, added to my favourites. Some years ago, my mother answered the phone, and pretty well burst into tears, thrust the phone at me and went into another room. I, wondering what the #### was going on, spoke into the phone and could not believe my...

    Bindweed

No, just get as much of the tendril, leaves and all, into the pot that you can, without spilling the liquid, then cover it all up with a flat stone or somesuch. Just to keep the bindweed in the weedkiller long enough for it to absorb plenty, and keep the birds/wildlife out.

How do I find a good but cheap landscape gardener?

Hmm, no one in West Yorkshire is on their register, strange, I know quite a few excellent workmen/firms. Know from naff ones as well!

How do I find a good but cheap landscape gardener?

I hate to say it, but good and cheap don't necessarily go together.

    Bindweed

EVERY little bit of a root will grow! It is an horrendous plant, however, some people seem to like it as they let it flower! One way I found to control it, at my last home, was to mix some STRONG weedkiller up, then find a few old yoghurt pots and bed them into the ground near a tip...

Best type of wood to use as a mortar board

But you better get the mix right, or you'll be picking dried in plaster out of your beard for DAYS!

    stabilising a sloping garden

We have a similar problem at the school where I work. A banking, "landscaped" a few years ago, is now slipping into the Tennis Court, bit by bit. We have had a fresh landscaper in for his opinion, turns out the stone they took out, which new adorns my 20' high X 40-100' rockeries, to keep the...

    Angle grinder stand.

It's probably a bit late now, but have you checked out Toolstation.com? They have a chopsaw, complete, for under £30. Looks quite neat, and I know from previous purchases from them, the quality of their tools is A1.

    Accreditation?

Try to get a recommendation from someone you know who has had similar work done, that's the BEST accreditation I know!

    Spongey Lawn

I hate to admit it, but the boy's right! At least it's green! You ought to see my school "lawns", 1/2 an acre of green, shame it's 60% moss

    Scorched grass

Depends, what sort of fertiliser was it? If it was an ammonia based fertiliser, probably not. Tip: Sprinkle a small amount of Sulphate of Ammonia onto a dandelion crown in a lawn, and burn it clean out! You'll have to re-seed, but the dandy will be gone! What you'll probably have to do is...

Why is there so few women, doing diy & building work

We're far too well mannered! The only Tradeswoman I have known, in a "mucky" job was a plumber. I don't know how good she is, as she only quoted the once for a job at work, and her price was twice as much as the next nearest! HE got the job!

    Radiator Problems Need HELP!!!!

I'm not a plumber, so my first thought would be, send for your local plumber! If you are determined to do it yourself, why not go for the push-fit kit? I KNOW it works with central heating as a lot of our piping is now polypipe and push-fit connectors, and I work at a school! Just a thought.
