Door frames, gaps, filling after plastering

Yes just hack the foam back below the surface of the wall by a few mm and skim over with plaster or filler. I've filled big holes around door frames in exactly this way.

If that is what it says, yes I would object to that. (What is a banned group? Who decides when it should be banned? What qualifies as 'public support'? Such a law sounds ambiguous and ripe for manipulation)

What bothers me about that poster is that it says "it is hate crime" rather than "it is a hate crime". I can see legitimate arguments for a crime being decribed as a hate crime, i.e. a familiar crime such as an assualt, but which is motivated by hate or even by a particular sort of hate, if you...

The sentencing is worse for hate crimes. For example, it is 6 months max for common assault, but 24 months max indictable for racially or religiously aggravated common assault. It is up to 6 months for putting bacon on a doorknob (intimidation/harassment/threatening behaviour under the Public...

Brexit - the will of which people?

Hmm, what I keep hearing is the opposite: 'nobody knew what they were voting for [so we need another referendum]'

But they're the same as here? Welfare has increased dramatically since the 1960s, so have their single parent households.

US data look essentially the same as UK. What details do you mean?

I didn't say one causes the other, I said they were highly correlated. It's fiendishly difficult to prove causation. But the hypothesis conforms to the basic principle of economic incentives.

Pretty simple. State subsidise people to have kids alone by guaranteeing them income and child care and...you get more people having kids alone. https://www.economicshelp.org/blog/6817/economics/the-growing-size-of-the-welfare-state-in-the-uk/ http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6542031.stm

The problem of youth offending is overwhelmingly correlated with single parent households, which are themselves overwhelmingly correlated with the advance of the welfare state and the cultural dismissal of personal responsibility (from which family values flow).

I carry a knife routinely. It's a useful tool. I don't think I should go to jail for it. (It's a penknife not a butchers knife or anything)

*sigh* Your argument is now circular.

    3) Hit him with exactly the same deliberation, and cause exactly the same nose bleed, but do it for reasons of antisemitism = a worse crime with a longer sentence. Why? Because you hurt his religious feelings as well as his nose? (Even if he wasn't even Jewish?)

It is not missing, it is the very crux of the argument. Classically, aggravating factors (e.g. lack of remorse) simply mean the court can push the sentence up to the legal maximum and no further. "Throw the book at him!". It is not at all clear why hatred for David should now be considered a...

Yes, but until recently 'hate' was not considered a unique form of motivation with its own special categories. Some types of hate are now counted, but others are not, making it not blind justice but preferential justice. Previously, accidental death became muder if you intended to kill the...

Investigating officer Detective Constable Bruce Wilson, of Aylesbury Local CID, said: “This was an appalling unprovoked attack against a man due to his transgender status and was motivated by hate." Why did the boy deserve a longer sentence because he hated the transgenger man for being...

And there we have it. 6 months in jail for the punch, plus 18 months in jail for having the wrong ****tish thoughts. Orwellian.

That's a contradiction. A crime cannot also be different crimes at the same time. If someone punches you because they're jelous you drive a better can than they do, you would be satisfied with a shorter sentence than if they punch you because they don't like your skin colour. Why? Those are...

Yes, we all know what a hate crime is. George Orwell taught us that in school. You really do have trouble understanding the point: why do we need separate categories for: 1: crime; e.g. punching someone for a non religious reason 2: hate crime; e.g. punching someone for a religious...

200 years ago we ran business that traded in black slaves. 70 years ago guest houses would advertise 'no blacks'. People would refuse to be seen by Indian doctors. 60 years ago white families would move out of a street if Caribbeans moved in. 50 years ago Alf Garnet was making jokes about nig...
