Peeling paint section on stud wall

OP, Why the stud wall - is it a timber framed house or is there some other reason for building the stud wall? Is the outside skin an exposed brick wall or a rendered wall or something else?

Missing mortar at base of wall

OP, I could tell you exactly what to do but it might involve you in supplying more pics & more information - are you up for it?

    Replacing my main water pipe

OP, Insuduct is a great device but given the closeness of the meter & the already dug out interior exposure then it might be quicker & cheaper to roughly follow what this guy does on you tube - he's called "Ultimate Handyman" & he's doing a "Lead pipe replacement".

Do I need a DPM on my concrete base under my suspended floor?

OP, Where do you have "damp/mould problems"? Why not annotate pics to show the suspect locations? Would you also post a pic showing the external ground level outside the bay? The bay frontage would need at least three air bricks, and through ventilation from front to rear elevations under the...

Rising Damp Internal Chimney Breast Eastbourne

OP, Capillary Action typically causes rising damp - its an extremely simple process thats been observed & studied over many years.

Plastering over a steel embedded in a wall

OP, I cant tell if we are looking at the RSJ flange or web - I think its the flange ie. the RSJ was installed on its side so to speak? Up to about 1900 thick timber beams called Bonding Beams were sometimes installed in masonry walls - the idea was literally to "bond" the masonry. It wasn't a...

    Chimney breast 'part' removal?

OP, 1. What are you aiming to do with the chimney breast opening? Whats your purpose? 2. Why not post a pic of the chimney breast as it is now?

    Fixing fallen paving

OP, Its possible that a door step was removed before the ramp was installed - its also a possibility that fixing what looks like Faux Stone cladding could have caused the "hole"? FWIW: The ramp should have had a DPM (a membrane) lapping up all three sides? To fill the hole then use a few...

    Partially opening chimney breast

OP, Thats a small surround & fireplace - typically used in a bedroom. You would have no need to open up the chimney breast like the large fireplace opening in the front room. Given you have a brick arch in the front room then you will have a brick arch in the room in question. After opening up...

Crack in render at dpc level below bellcast

OP, There's a regular mesh like pattern? However, hack it all off below the Bell Cast to ground level, and clean up the brickwork. Then leave it alone. Raising the path might cause problems that dont presently exist How do you intend to add 20mm to the path surface?

    Partially opening chimney breast

OP, You could dry position the new surround against the chimney breast, & mark in pencil the fireplace opening on the chimney breast plaster? Given a typical Victorian surround opening it would be safe to then open up the pencilled in area. Once opened up you could investigate what might need...

Rising Damp Internal Chimney Breast Eastbourne

OP, Your pic doesn't show any signs of damp? Why not take closer more clear pics esp where you have now removed the skirting? Whoever goes on the roof should take pics of the stack flashing & the top flaunching of the stack? Inserting a ventilating cowl in the redundant flue chimney pot will...

    Shower Head Leak

OP, As posters #2 & #5 say - replace it.

Flue: to fill or not to fill

Poster #7, There are other references regarding early cavity walls. The Historic England document is referring to older buildings but even then it notes how sealed cavities can provide a "warm space". As my above: Bldg Regs require & have required sealed cavities.

Flue: to fill or not to fill

Poster #8, Perhaps you would like to read the Bldg Regs Approved Document J -the section regarding flues.

Flue: to fill or not to fill

Edit: but it seems that it took another seventy years or so before cavity walls were introduced into working class homes - that was after millions of them had already been built without cavity walls, & so mostly poor people suffered the TB consequences.

Leak From Bathroom Sink / Bath Waste Coming Underneath Old External Wall Cast Iron Joint

OP, Madrab's idea to remove all the lead waste plus the trap (& the overflow) is a good idea that will work - but it would also require the present lead basin waste to be changed to 40mm, & to Tee branch it into the new 40mm bath waste at a better angle. Two CI cuts: Cutting at the "cut here"...

    Plaster around brick opening

OP, Just do as above suggested - when the bevel is setting then cut out any significant variations.

    Plaster around brick opening

OP, The pic of the neighbour's attempt looks wrong, & not done very well at all? Why not do as suggested above?
