Insulating floor above garage - joists on slab

I've just had the whole house wrapped in 60mm phenolic boards. Amazing difference. Condensation in the bathroom practically eliminated. Now take pleasure watching the exhaust from my neighbour's boiler while mine remains off! :) Loft: check. Walls: check. Floors are next. Good to hear it...

Insulating floor above garage - joists on slab

Thanks for the replies folks. And for the tip on the asbestos B-A-S. Think it's just concrete but will keep an eye out.

Insulating floor above garage - joists on slab

Hi all, I know that there are loads of questions about floor insulation, but this is a slightly different scenario, so apologies if any repetition. I have a bedroom above a garage. The floor sits on joists(?) which are bedded in mortar onto a concrete slab which forms the garage ceiling...

    Dark brown paint? Contains lead?

Been stripping more of it off today. Joe's theory about it coming on a roll has some weight - it looks like there are vertical lines at periodic intervals which could be the edge of something that had come on a roll. It's brown with orange/yellow underneath. If you scrape it cold it flakes...

    Dark brown paint? Contains lead?

Its not bitumenous... I know what that looks like. And this is an internal wall. Just can't believe anyone would ever paint their walls that colour!! No smell of horsies either :)

    Dark brown paint? Contains lead?

Hi All, Just started stripping off wallpaper in a bedroom in my 1932 house ready to have the walls reskimmed. Underneath the wallpaper is a layer of what looks like brown paint. It peels off in big flakes. Wondering if anyone has seen anything like this before? Did people really ever...

Anyone have a SECOM bellbox cover? Will pay.

Just to provide an update for the benefit of others. I checked out the retr0bright page and while I didn't use exactly the same method I just painted on a bottle of hair bleach (see link) and left it out in the sun for a couple of days. Worked a treat - as white as Simon Cowell's teeth...

    Solvent weld mitred guttering?

Thanks everyone for the responses. I'll check out those 150 degree corners, might be the simplest solution. Regarding the pavement round the bottom - that was going to be my original solution, but since we have scaff up at the moment thought it was an opportunity. Cheers, Ben

    Solvent weld mitred guttering?

Hi all, I have scaffold up at the moment so it's a good time to add a gutter around my circular lead bay roof. I don't think there's ever been a gutter there and the rain off it falls clear of the walls but it splashes up in the mud below and leaves stains on the walls. Since we're having the...

Anyone have a SECOM bellbox cover? Will pay.

Had thought of that... but... I like having the logo of a monitored alarm company on the cover... an extra deterrent.

Anyone have a SECOM bellbox cover? Will pay.

Hi All, I recently sourced a SECOM bellbox cover off eBay. When it turned up it's fairly old so has yellowed somewhat. Do any of you installers have one hanging about that's still white? Of course will pay for it and shipping costs. It's only the cover I need. I have a new CQR multibox...

Connecting to sewer on private land

Thanks.... would rather find our feasibility before speaking to the owners... we've not long been there and since we're doing a fair bit of renovation they are a bit peeved with the noise and etc!! Will keep digging - just wondered if anyone knew whether there was a rule.

Connecting to sewer on private land

Hi, I understand that most private sewers have transferred ownership to the water companies now. We are considering adding an en-suite to a bedroom - trouble is that the soil stack is on the completely opposite side of the house. However, on the side of the house where the en-suite...

    Z-wave Home Automation.

Have a look at lightwaverf - similar concept but much cheaper. Have a few of their gizmos in my house and it generally works quite well (not perfect tho). You can buy the stuff in B&Q branded siemens.

    Cavity insulation

Not sure about the technicalities of what can and cannot be filled, but currently AFAIK the cavity wall filling is not free (unless you're on benefits, or old). However, you might be wise to hold your horses until March. As I understand it the government are reforming the ECO/green deal...
