Been stripping more of it off today. Joe's theory about it coming on a roll has some weight - it looks like there are vertical lines at periodic intervals which could be the edge of something that had come on a roll. It's brown with orange/yellow underneath. If you scrape it cold it flakes...

Its not bitumenous... I know what that looks like. And this is an internal wall. Just can't believe anyone would ever paint their walls that colour!! No smell of horsies either :)

Just to provide an update for the benefit of others. I checked out the retr0bright page and while I didn't use exactly the same method I just painted on a bottle of hair bleach (see link) and left it out in the sun for a couple of days. Worked a treat - as white as Simon Cowell's teeth...

Have a look at lightwaverf - similar concept but much cheaper. Have a few of their gizmos in my house and it generally works quite well (not perfect tho). You can buy the stuff in B&Q branded siemens.
