Join what to what! Sorry I'm confused? If u are joining together two pipes that will have no flow through them then it's still a dead leg. Ideally remove pipe to within 6 inches to where there would be a flow.

It is fully pumped. The diverted valve is the main giveaway as pump will pump around the heating and cyclinder coil. Open vented system of course. :D

Upgrade existing to condensing system boiler and upgrade cylinder to unvented. You will need to check incoming mains pressure and flow rate before doing this. Unvented cylinder will still have immersion back up. If you are after saving space then fit a decent combi but again check existing...

All modern boilers have a test point on them specifically for taking combustion readings and still have emission levels where if exceeded could be classed as dangerous.
