    knife sharpener?

I've got a stone bought off ebay so maybe it's rubbish but doesn't seem to work. I would take it round to a cobblers but invariably it;s going to cost an arm and a leg for something that I could do myself if I just knew what to buy. How long should it take to sharpen a blunt knife? I've read...

    knife sharpener?

got a load of kitchen knives in need of a sharpen. The standard tool they came with is pretty crap, also tried a sharpening stone but cannot get them sharp on that either. I've tried various techniques including Ray Mears figure of 8 sharpen and no luck. Any ideas on what to try or some other...

    locked safe!

I think I managed to close it while the lever on the back was in the setting position. However, the latches still closed. If it was still in the "setting code" position then you'd expect it to open again. The dials are lifted and then turned and then let go of to place it on the number. I'm...

    locked safe!

So, I did something wrong with the setting mechanism on my safe and have now locked it and can't get into it (nothing in it luckily). It's a 3 dial combo but each dial goes up to 20 so impossible to work through the numbers. Anyone know how to listen to the dials to see what number might be...

    bubble in wallpaper?

OOI, why are the bubbles rock hard instead of being able to be pressed in?

    bubble in wallpaper?

Thinking about repainting a room but it has previously had wallpaper and the previous owner just painted straight over it. There are some bubbles in places but I'm not sure whether it's damp, bad plastering, or the paint. The bubbles seem pretty hard so if it was just air it would have "popped"...

filter for shower, can't find correct hose

I just thought that if it was made as a female attachment then, the actual male part you are talking about inside it might not have threads as the threading would be on the inside of the nut. The female part is 25mm across or 20mm on the inside. The plastic part in the pic is 20mm across. So...

filter for shower, can't find correct hose

Does the male end in that case have a thread on it? Because the female part in the above picture has thread on the inside.

filter for shower, can't find correct hose

This filter usually attaches straight to the wall outlet in the shower and then the shower head hose goes on the other end. However, because of the width of the cartridge it cannot fit as it hist the wall. It needs a male connector but all flexible hoses seem to be female/female. Any ideas...

bath small sealant cracks on new sealent?

Any particular brand recommended? The one I used isn't mastik, it's some type of cheap caulking I found in the basement...

bath small sealant cracks on new sealent?

Just redid the sealant yesterday. Seems like I didn't make it thick enough or the sealant is just cheap as a few small cracks have developed. Can I run another layer of sealant over the top or do I need to rip it out and start again?

    tight tap

No trying to loosen the tap, just the handle that turns on hot or cold.

    tight tap

Don't I need to isolate it to do that? And once the cartridge is removed, what do I have to loosen?

Just trying to loosen the tap, not remove the whole cartridge I think...

    tight tap

I took the cap off this and unscrewed it but on the inside there doesn;t seem to be anywhere to loosen the blue cog. Any ideas?

wax on table blocking sanding sheets

The wax is kind of melted into the wood surface though isn't it? Scraping it won;t remove much I don't think. Could I run an iron over with a kitchen towel underneath?

wax on table blocking sanding sheets

Got a table that I want to sand down but it is covered in a layer of protective wax. Everytime I use a sanding sheet, it sands a bit but then the sheets are clogged with the wax and it stops sanding. Any ideas how I can remove the wax layer without going through a shed load of sheets? I'm...

    replate chrome, strip chrome?

I have some light stands, which were originally chrome plated (nickel-chrome). They were left in a shed for about 15 years and although some of the chrome is intact, there are various areas of rust that I cannot seem to get rid off - it just seems like surface rust but am wondering how best to...

    cannot remove top of cistern

Could it be the flush valve also? Not sure what I've done but earlier, in trying to get the lid off, I twisted some part of the actual syphon, so now, the cistern tries to fill up but can't quickly enough and continues to leak into the bowl.

    cannot remove top of cistern

Done, thanks. Seems like while it's filling it up, it is also leaking into the bowl. Is that an oring problem from the seal inside the cistern or the doughnut connecting the cistern to the bowl?
