d&j: That's true, but the British people have just demonstrated their generosity in donating to the Asian appeal. The difference in bogus asylum seekers coming into this country holding their hand out is that the element of choice has been removed from us. I'm about to make my income tax...

    Crack in Wall

You often do get a slight crack from the end of a steel lintel from differential expansion but 3mm is a lot; they are usually more like hairline cracks. The box section ones can be worse than the type where the internal blockwork sits on a flange like the outside brickwork. Any chance of a pic...

Are you saying the chimney stack was built after the bungalow, and is that on an outside wall? A pic would probably help?

    Smell from soil pipe

I can't think of anything else that's obvious John but what is the stack made of and if it's boxed in, perhaps you can't see the defect? I assume you do connect to the stack so can you see your connections? (I've got a lovely dog but she does fart sometimes and it does smell like a drain...

    Smell from soil pipe

The only thought I've had is if the stack was not ventilated as it should be, perhaps blocked by a bird's nest, then if your kitchen sink, or washing machine stand pipe, drains directly to the stack then the water seal is being sucked out. I once knew someone who bought a house where the stack...

    Who needs circuit breakers?

Last year the CBI stated that there is dissatisfaction with the quality of school leavers as a new survey showed one in three firms gives remedial training to compensate for failures in the education system. The CBI survey also showed that 33 per cent of firms needed to give school leavers...

Adam reckons: You mentioned the Tate gallery. Well, all the Titan mission has usefully produced is a few pictures of some rocks to hang in the Tate Modern.

My ridiculous comment was to provoke an argument to justify this expense. What I was really saying was that there are more important things to spend money on. From a world population of about 6.5 billion there are over one billion living in poverty and many are dying as a result. A man stood on...

Agree with breezer, but a ladder stay is what you need as well. The one I've got is a slightly different design and has rubber pads which touch the wall so ladder is less likely to slip sideways. The ladder should never rest on the gutter.

How much did that cost then because there are more important things to spend money on, like curing the common cold and stopping men's hair falling out. Someone will say that it's out of a different budget.

Problems downloading the new version of Media Player

Are you on a 56k dial-up connection? If it's dropping the connection I was thinking it was the idle time-out. It's a long time since I had dial-up but think that downloading may count as idle time, often about 20 mins. The MS updates resume the download where it left off, so I would have...
