    rewireable fuses

Well, some people run out of 30a fusewire and use what they perceive as the next best option to going to their local hardware shop. Can you give some reason why you would not consider it suitable protection? 6 X 5A, the general principle would be the same with the reason for not doing it...

    rewireable fuses

Can you wire a 30a holder with 2 X 15A pieces of fusewire to give 30a protection. I suspect not but have not had to consider it before. Anyone any thoughts?

    lamp search

I tried Halfords, took along my meter. Same size physically but a 12v/10W lamp is 1.1ohm, a 12v/5W is about 2.2ohms. Maybe I've got ohms law mixed up or my power formula is u/s, but I can't get a calculation to come near these figures. I'm puzzled Judging by the lamps at halfords the lamp...

    lamp search

Can anyone help I'm looking for replacement lamps for a sign. They are commonly called festoon lamps, the type you find in the internal light in a car, a small glass tube with metal conical ends. I've done a lot of raking around but can't find them. They are 42mm long by about 10mm diameter...

No gas at burner pressure test point?

you're a pretty clever dude Tony so I hesitate to reply but just in case it helps.......some condensers may read zero as they tend to "suck" from the gas valve

    Gas Hob + Canopy

The bs was revised last year. You can get to read them at a good library, and you are allowed to take notes and can print two pages. Kev, where can you get a copy at £15? that would be a very attractive price, most are in excess of £50. For cookers BS 6172:2004 is £64 and I seem to remember...

How fast can you drain a bath?

I think you will find the force "pushing" the water from an open bath is rho(density) X g(gravitational pull) X h(height). Because it is height dependent the flow will reduce as the bath empties. It's really not anything to do with atmospheric pressure. You can stop water running out of...

    Gas hob installation cost

I charge £60 including parts (fittings, pipe, valve) if the gas pipe is below the hob position and the worktop is cut to size. This also includes removing the old hob if replacing, and relighting pilots in boilers (sometimes a real pain). Usually takes an hour and a half, never done it in an...

How fast can you drain a bath?

The pipe size, bends, elbows, etc will act as a resistance to the flow, lets call this the overall resistance to flow. This can be calculated or measured as a differential pressure under flow conditions. What is important is that this differential pressure increase is squared (DP X DP) with...

    cable protection

I have a ring circuit in 2.5 t+e protected by a 32a mcb, if I then take a spur off this to a twin socket in 2.5 t+e, does this mean the spur cable is not adequately protected by the 32a mcb?

    unswitched sockets

is there a regulation somewhere that says 13a socket outlets should normally be switched. I know there are occasions where unswitched sockets are more suitable but is there a general recommendation or regulation that indicates sockets should normally be switched?

single to twin socket way adapters

a couple of years ago I saw these fitted in a flat, they (clipsal I think) are an adapter which converts a single socket into a twin socket. I found that there was some difficulty getting the plug to fit into them. Anyway I fitted a few for a friend recently and guess what? difficulty...

    old wiring

I've just moved into my "new" house last week, think it was built in the 60s. a lot of the wiring is kind of rubbery coated instead of pvc, the earths are not copper, and look like aluminium. Can anyone tell me if it is/was aluminium earths that were installed about that time, thanks...and is...
