simple tap fitting, advice needed please.

Thanks dextrous. does the locktite tape set? I just know that if the taps aren't really firm then they will get twisted round by the heavy handed family. Is the idea to use enough ptfe/compound to form a sort of washer at the base of the thread?

Darkening white patches in oak fire surround

the repro-antique bodgers approach might be useful. get hold of some watercolour paint, even a kids poster paint set will do, and mix a really watery wash of a colour that makes up the difference - trial and error helps here, put some on and if its too brown or too yellow wipe it off and adjust...

simple tap fitting, advice needed please.

I have just put in a butler sink and moved two separate kitchen taps from standard upright fittings (that were fixed through the worktop) to wall mounted ones. I have two brass wall mounted elbows (that will be behind some t&g panelling), each has a 4" chrome extension pipe that gives enough...

    Flip over chopsaw/table saw

I have got one of these too - except mine is badged as an Elu, but then I bought it about 15 years ago, and DeWalt must have bought them out or something. That saw is the best bit of kit I ever bought, it cost me £600 in 1994 - but it has paid for itself several hundred times by now. The best...

Advice on a bse to raise toilet bowel. :-)

Thats tricky! Are you sure it needs raising that far? your feet will dangle when you sit on it, lol. An easily worked, non porous material 80mm thick? I think you'd do better making a frame of say 50mm pine, screwing that to the floor, and then adding a good thick ply-wood top to it...

    Buying Teak Timber

Two thoughts. 1 prefabricate the benches upside down, screwing through the battens (from what would be underneath) into the main slats (so the screws don't protrude), and then turn them over and fix through the battens between the main slats. Use expanding polyurethane glue too, it survives...

    options for wooden doors finish

Yes I know what you mean, its a pain to get wood looking just the way you want it - and then ruin it by adding a syrup of a varnish, even the clearest yacht varnish has a effect equivalent to oiling the wood, making it more rich. Luckily there is a very simple solution. Get some acrylic based...

    Sealant on wood worktops -

The real problem here is that a couple of incompatible processes have been used together. wood always has a moisture content, it never dries out completely, and this is not normally a problem until someone goes and slaps some impervious silicon onto it. The moisture trapped just below the...

    Channel 5 Television

Can't get channel 5 at all, can't get freeview either, nor digital radio. and I live 4 miles from the centre of Brighton, which advertises itself as some sort of wired city. upshot of this is, because the content on the only 4 other channels is such drivel, I have stopped watching TV. its great.

    Recycling

Apart from the risks of radon and other evil gasses, subsidence and the general toxicity of the site. the problem with land fill is that it is a finite solution. as you say yourself the holes were the result of a centuries activity, such holes are not created at the the same rate as we produce...

    Tinternet films

Why bother downloading them when they can be got free as streaming media? at least that way there is no fear of virii. but to keep to the thread, try using veoh or stage six - with both of these you have the option to save the vid to your hard disc if you want - or just to watch it streaming...

    A Revolution

My god you might have a point there... but then again. I'm sure I remember that at least one commoner was involved in the English Civil War, the Swing Riots, the Peterloo and cable street masacres, The diggers, the Luddites, The American lands, not to mention the peasants revolt (as above)...

    Buying Oak

I always get my seasoned oak from a sawmill rather than a timber merchant. It is usually a load cheaper, sustainable and with a bit of research you usually get the choice of kiln or air seasoned. Also the experience of buying it is a whole load better, usually. You'd be suprised how many small...

    Wood colour query

You can use wood bleach on the surface to get it paler, see http://www.rustins.co.uk/wbleach.htm but I would imagine that sapele will always retain a bit of a weird colour, It is possible to change the hue of some woods by fuming them (with acetic acid, amonia or various other chemicals)...

I reckon you left out an option from the polls - which is 'the manufacturer'. So I voted public. because sooner or later we will be legislated against & fined enough that we start doing what the government should be doing right now. refusing to lug all that needless wrapping back home in the...
