    stairs

there is no real need to do that - most primers are balanced to work directly on a clean dry surface. if you were to wipe with white spirit it would be as a degreaser (and actually white spirit leaves a residue so meths would be better). Ive just noticed that you said "undercoat" - the proper...

HOT TAP - WHICH SIDE OF BASIN?

another obscure driving fact is that the speed limit is not 70 mph on a dual carriagway but 77mph - the reason... speedometers are required to have a +/- tolerence of 10% so if you are doing 77mph it is a valid defence that your speedo was misinforming you. however do 78 mph and you are...

    Mason mitreing (??) worktops

point taken fitter - I was thinking common or garden mitre. funny thing is I work with masons often and have never heard them refer to one - must be a carpenters thang. I must say that i am with aidy_is when he says and scoby-Beasley clearly you are the one with the expertise here...

Is an earth circuit required on domestic lighting circuit?

bad news then p_a but thought i should play the devils advocate here anyway. the learned posts above are right - your house isnt up to standard... current installation standard that is. should you make an installation you would be advised to conform to it. however as it exists and...

    Fence post advice?

it seems to me that if you are going to cement in the post you have it will effectively be lengthened to the desired length when the concrete sets. just make sure you make a good mix and perhaps try to key the post a bit with a chisel. if the mix is strong they will become virtually a solid unit.

    Terracotta tiles

nearly forgot - to polish them? why bother? clear wax will do it but you will have to keep it up. i'd just wash them with washing up liquid and hot water. a good tip is to make the last rinse soapy and let it dry - then buff them up

    Terracotta tiles

lizzy are they the ones that are cut to an almost islamic looking repeat pattern? if so they are probably porcelain and are fairly immune to almost everything - try solvents and then detergents to get rid of old dirt probably trapped in an ancient layer of wax. sometimes they can go dull with...

    stairs

wash it with sugar soap, lightly sand it - and you are set to paint undercoat. remember the better the surface you start with the better the finish so take some care

    re-enforcing a wooden floor

there is one possibility - and its a long shot - but ill give it anyway. structuraly the beams are dependant upon their shape - the top surface is in compression and the bottom surface is in tension - that is why a wider beam is more rigid, it has little to do with the material mass. a...

    Is MDF okay for floorboards?

dodgy quality of mdf = contains formaldehyde in large doses, only bad for those who breath its dust though. regarding floorboards and replacing them with mdf - dont do it. for one floorboards make up a structural element of the floor in combination with joists - that is why you should use...

    Another Off topic Discussion?

I kind of like the ones we brits live with as part of our heritage - like: Kilts and clan tartan - invented in a london club in the 19th century and that was only shortly after Queen victoria decided to 'invent' most of the pageantry that still takes place, after she received a report that...

    Which trade costs the most?

Studders you don't come across the least bit egotistical - on the contrary you made a measured reply to a fairly provocative assault by one of the

HOT TAP - WHICH SIDE OF BASIN?

ah yes forgot my reply to your point  following from above i'd define bodgers as careless - not because they dont know any given rule but because they arent interested in the effect of their actions - perhaps if they did it would occur to them to look for a standard.

HOT TAP - WHICH SIDE OF BASIN?

hmmm. good point simeon - the one about driving. it seems to me that regulations are good when they have a clear logic and apply to situations that call for them - like driving on one side of the road or other or driving slowly through populated areas or in traffic. but even then we all...

    Candle Dye on Stove

well the classic way of removing wax stains is to get lots of brown craft paper (the stuff with brown stripes that you use for parcels) and then lay one sheet on the wax and apply a very hot iron - the wax will migrate towards the heat and soak into the paper - repeat this as many times as you...

    Site update

Yes I'm in agreement - the board is looking good. Perhaps a mod could help settle a minor issue that is brewing in the diy general forums. which bulletin board system is it that you are using? looks like phpBB to me - but perhaps it could be vbulletin cheers. keep up the good work

    Which trade costs the most?

Jeez... this is like watching someone with an over inflated ego work out some trauma from the playground. But... I never could bear to see the bigheads get away with it - so I went and got links to the homepages of phpBB and Vbulletin and I am delighted to say that the board...

torque settings for wheel (axle) nuts

Thanks everyone for your responses. I did remove it using a length of scaff tube - and put it back on using the same tube. I used a 200 newton torque wrench at 100, then 200, then guestimated the additional torque needed. but am begining to think i should go and get it checked after...

    Source code on my website

&amp is what html uses to denote an ampersand character - that is a '&' - it needs to do this because the ampersand is a reserved character that is used to denote the begining of a special character string - therefore it cant be used simply as a & - I imagine that the program you are...

    Which trade costs the most?

hmmm. anybody remember Roger Bannister? ran the 1st 4 minute mile AND made a living as a brain surgeon. now i realise that athletics is nowhere near as difficult as plumbing  but i think the analogy still holds good. strangely enough I know a locum G.P. who is also a well...
