    Replacing a thermostat

I am going to have my hall plastered and redecorated. This will leave an old Sunvic dial type thermostat looking out of place and old. I have an ideal Mexico floorstanding boiler and a British Gas UP1 controller next to it. Again nothin fancy - can set heating to come on twice daily, hot...

    Asbestos insulating boards

A guy on our street has had a sample of his ceiling panels tested, found to be "asbestolux" type boards and has paid over £4.5k to have these removed from his relatively small garage. He sent a letter round, advising his neighbours of this finding and now my wife wonders if we should do the...

Gas leak in newly purchased house!!!!

Fix it, pay up, move on. Such a minor problem in a huge purchase such as a house. I doubt very much the vendor deceived you. The onus is on you before sale to do the necessary due diligence. I had a connection to the water tank in the loft come adrift 3 weeks after moving in to mine -...

    What mortar mix?

Hi, I noticed a loose flag on the patio today, lifted it, loosened the next one, etc etc until now I have 6 or so to rebed. They were set on (hard) mortar - not dabbed - which I've spent some time removing. I've read loads about which sand/cement mix to use and how wet to have it but get...

    Metposts (I know...)

Well had to take 6 out. Took a whole day! Combination of drilling, chiselling, swearing, and burning of the last one. Not fun!

    Metposts (I know...)

I know no one is a fan of metposts (me neither) I have a fence built in to a wall which has used cemented in metposts to secure the posts. I now have a wobbly fence with secure metposts but rotten wood sitting in them. I know the answer is not to have done it like this in the first place...

Should estate agent notify me a house needs rewiring?

No. They are paid by the seller! The onus is on you to undertake due diligence.

    What is pumping over?

Interesting. I have had to bleed the radiators a couple of times since the TRVS were fitted a couple of weeks ago (plumber mentioned this may be necessary and should be expected.). It always seems to settle in one radiator in the bedroom ( which I find unusal as a towel rail in the ensuite is...

    What is pumping over?

Thank you. No, one radiator left free of TRV in the hall (where thermostat is) I'll experiment with turning all TRVs off, thank you.

    What is pumping over?

I have an ideal Mexico boiler with gravity hot water and pumped central heating. Recently had TRVs fitted, system drained and refilled with inhibitor by a plumber. Was in loft at the time the heating came on and a small amount of water came out of the vent pipe ver the small feed and...

    Radiator bleed valve sheared off

Just to update, thanks for putting me on the right track. Turns out was a Myson rad and they very kindly sent me out a replacement which fits perfectly. Thought I'd update in case anyone has the problem I the future. It was indeed a "centre rad" made by Myson for plumb centre. They call it...

    Radiator bleed valve sheared off

So, got my new bleed valve..... Turned off radiator valves.... Unscrewed the old one, put PTFE on the new (1/8 BSP) valve only to find it is too big. Any ideas - can't see a smaller one on the net? As it is I've put the old valve back in and wonder whether just to open the nut which...

    Radiator bleed valve sheared off

Thanks. Ordered. So to double check: turn TRV and lockshield off, unscrew bleed valve, catch water, insert new valve with PTFE on threads, open trv/locksheld, open bleed screw and bleed?

    Radiator bleed valve sheared off

Fair point! A close up. I'm reluctant to remove the valve until I have a new one to put in! As above 11mm spanner fits it (I realise this bears no relation to the thread size I need...)
