I now have a new found respect for.......

DNO Jointers. Watched a couple of lads from CE do a live c/o of a 90mm² 4-core u/g street feed cable over the weekend. ( It was opposite my house and I was providing the cuppa's :D ) The guys told me that most of the remaining houses in the street were off the same ( yellow ) phase and they...

    Phone wiring confusion

The orange and white pair is the first pair in the dropwire from the pole. The green and black pair is used as an additional line. It looks like the other socket you have found used to be a second independent phone line into the house. This has obviously been ceased now as it is not working.

Does this mean my rcd in my consumer unit could be faulty ?

Nope - see below.... That's why I was a bit worried. If he's daft enough to use a soaking wet mixer, that's his problem but I'm concerned about a safety device in my home that might not be working correctly. Would a PIR be a wise move, or are these pretty expensive ? The wiring is only...

Does this mean my rcd in my consumer unit could be faulty ?

  The mixer they were using was 240V NOT 110V. Still, I suppose it may be worth getting someone in to do a test once I've had the building work completed. Thanks for all the replies.

Does this mean my rcd in my consumer unit could be faulty ?

We've had plasterers in today and during the rain, he decided to make another mix !! His mixer was soaked and as he switched it on, it gave him a "bit" of a shock. However, this didn't trip the rcd in my consumer unit. Strangely though, a couple of weeks ago we were using a four-way trailing...

    dno live working

IIRC it's called ABC, stands for Aerial Bunched Cable. Three insulated singles twisted together if that's the stuff you are on about.

Installation of Dry Lining installation boxes

I did mine by cutting the holes in the plasterboard before the skim. However, I was lucky enough the be able to be there when the plasterer was doing the job so once he had done the final polish, I cut the width of the back-box through his skim coat to the boards and removed it. Might seem a...

Replacing recessed ceiling lights - wiring question.

Thanks for the reply TTC. The existing lights are 240v and the ones they are being replaced with are 240v also. However, even though this is a lot less current to deal with than elv lights, I will leave the existing setup and just change the fittings for her. Thanks.

Replacing recessed ceiling lights - wiring question.

Been asked by a neighbour if I could do this for her. She wants to replace 8 20W Halogens with another model of fitting, also rated at 20W. When I had a look at the existing installation I noticed that each separate light has been wired to a Multi-Way Junction Block ( via 0.75mm Flex ) then to...

    Memera 2000 AD MCB

I can probably get him to wait a couple of weeks or so before he'll just "dive in" and try to do it himself, so if anyone can confirm any of the above it would be really appreciated. In the meantime, I'm going to see if I can scrounge some cable of any of the sites I visit, I might even just go...

    Memera 2000 AD MCB

It is fed off the rcd side of the board atm via the existing 40A mcb. The existing shower is only an 8.5KW unit. I wondered if the 40A would be OK for use but as I'm not a spark, I haven't got access to the usage characteristics of mcb's.

    Memera 2000 AD MCB

It's for a 10.5KW shower. It's fed via 6mm cable clipped direct over a run of about 5M. IF I think correctly a 40A mcb is too small ( 43.75A draw from shower ) and a 50A would be too big for the cable rating ( 47A according to tlc's calculator ). Basically, he's asked me to find out for him...

    Memera 2000 AD MCB

Hi guys, my mate has one of the aforementioned boards and needs to find a 45A Type B mcb for it. Are these actually available because we've searched quite a bit and only been able to find a 40 or a 50 amp version. TIA - Shaky

Hot + Cold Water from same tap.

Hot + Cold Water from same tap.

The hot water comes from the Boiler which is usually on red-hot all the time anyway. It's mainly for giving the yard a good clean with the old Jeyes Fluid once every week or so. It gets rid of the smell of Dog **** much better when used with hot water. Thanks for all the replies peeps.

It's not really an option because there is very limited space unfortunately.

Hot + Cold Water from same tap.

Hi, could any of you guys tell me if this idea would be OK for the regs etc ? At present, I have an outside tap that just supplies cold water, I would like to be able to have the facility to have hot water via this same tap occasionally so what I propose to do is run pipes from the hot and...

Is this bonding situation still OK ?

Thanks Lucia, even though it would be a straightforward job to put a new bond onto the home side of the meter, I think a call to the local WA would be a more prudent move. I get the idea from my mate that the guy who did the work seemed to not be quite sure of what he was doing. Maybe a re-visit...
