Not used it myself, but it comes in decking planks, lining and solid 8x4 sheets, cuts on any saw and if you make sure it's UV stabalised it's claimed to last a long time. I can verify this as I use UV stabilized cortex sheets on my workshop/shed roof, 4 years so far and counting...pinenot :)

Your answers are not very clear, I don't understand how you can "Tile" a wooden shelf onto a backer board, perhaps it's just me. However Perhaps it would be best to right back to your original question (what kind of wood) unless your going to use teak, and even then there would be movement...

Yes, drilling the wood is very easy, it then holds the drill/screw in position as you drill into the steel whilst applying pressure. Just make sure you get the right length of screw, all materials prior to steel and 12 mm of thread into steel, they work really well...pinenot :)

I always drilled fast with a goodly pressure relieving it as the countersinking head dug into the wood...pinenot :)
