Looking at these pics, I would be inclined to clear some plaster above (try tapping the wall upwards and listen for a variation) the bricks sitting on the top of the packer may well just be infill and a proper lintel placed above. A suspect something in the past may have dictated this...pinenot :)

By fitting & gluing slips of wood to the top and bottom of the lock pocket/mortice, although they will present end grain not long grain, for the screws it does work...pinenot :)

It looks as though you've done well in ensuring what can be seen is done to a good job, but I'd be inclined to look closely at those zinc valleys, zinc is notorious for perforating with corrosion from the underside, especially in a salt borne air atmosphere...pinenot :)

At the possible thickness your suggesting i.e. 30 mm, there will be parts of mortar that may not dry sufficiently in my opinion. There are several polymer additives that may help, you'll need to do a bit of research on that I'm afraid...pinenot :)

Beware going for higher capacity cells, the charger was designed for a calibrated input of both v and amperage and at some 6 years of age may not rise to the occasion. Assuming you can get back to what they were like in the beginning, I think that's a better option. What you say about choice...

The charger (assuming nothings wrong with it) should charge the re-celled battery pack ok, as the voltage drop off when charging is nearly done is triggered by the filling cells themselves. Also the batteries packs are protected with a temperature cut off sensor, so it must be refitted exactly...
