Mystery of the garden gate footings

Deluks, thanks for trying to save me the graft :D I must say though that next door have their front gate - same wall as me etc - in the same gate footings And it wobbles about more than me on the way home from the pub  How about timber in the Metposts but also bracketed to...

Mystery of the garden gate footings

Agree on the metpost thing, they are indeed rubbish. There is a wall, it's about 3 inches gap either side from the metpost sockets. You can see it to the right of the metpost on the pic. Rubbish wall too I'm afraid - single skin of brick done narrow ways. So about 4 or 5 inch thick I guess...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/andrewrobs/Postpic.jpg Here is a pic...hope that helps Approx 2 1/4 inches square... Not dug out the junk from the bottom of it yet. If you look quite hard to the right of the socket, there are two runners...

Mystery of the garden gate footings

My front garden is missing a gate !!! Moved in a few months ago and want to replace it. It has the gate opening obviously, and it has footings for posts either side, the opening is 3 feet. However I'm struggling to find the posts that would slot in the footings. They are like metpost...

    flooring help please

Only way to go if you are doing as little as even one decent sized room, is with a proper continuous belt sander They are super heavy so that you get a flat finish all over, they level the floor for you You'll ruin your back, it will take FOREVER and burn out a few power tools using...

    Victorian floorboards ( Again)

The shrinking and expanding of the boards renders a lot of fillers pretty useless. I've left mine, and they aren't particularly close together either. The main reasons for filling - dust and drafts - haven't been a problem at all for me.

    Pricing up a job

No probs I think people also understand that they might have an area that is a bit smallish - but it's a day of your time...you can hardly charge by the hour and scoot off to the next job at 3pm... btw my plasterer is cheapish - young lad building his rep...he doesn't advertise or...

    Pricing up a job

I can only add my perspective as a customer... Where the plasterer comes from is irrelevant to me. Incidentally, I don't like paying materials seperate from labour. I'd rather be told in one go the whole price. Less to quibble about then at the end. I expect to pay about £250 to £300 for...

    Attaching trellis to existing fence

I'm sure a few people have worked out this formula before: Five foot lapboard wooden fence + busybody neighbour = no privacy She's harmless but god damn, she won't let us go in the garden without coming out of her house looking over, trying to get our attention. Lonely I guess, bless her...

    Guns

It may not have been so easy in the mayhem to suss who was doing the shooting, and who is shooting at the shooter. Think about it. Carnage. The other argument about 'should we ban hammers' - no for a simple reason. They are not designed as lethal weapons. Guns are. The pro-gun people come...

Old wooden floor gaps between boards

I'd live with it. Mine have gaps from 1mm to 10mm wide. Don't cause us no bother.

    I have stripped.......

Depends what you want the finish to be like. I would guess about £250/£300 for the room to be plastered inc materials. The finish would then be really pristine and you could paint over and the room would look top dollar. Or you could fill and level what you've got, and lining paper or...

You can get the continuous belt sanders now, very effective. Literally hardly any dust either, believe it or not.

    sanding bedroom floor

Hmmm...a good hand held orbital sander might do it, but it'd take a long time (days!!!) and the orbital might be knackered by the time it's done...or worst case scenario BEFORE you finish. A day's hire of a floor sander would do a much better job and save you a LOT of physical labour. Might...

    Floor Varnish Recommendations

Have you ruled out hardwaxoil? I used clear matt on my victorian pine boards and I think it's lovely, leaves them looking natural but still protects them.

There's a rat in mi kitchen

I wouldn't do this. We did before when I lived in the depths of south London but the problem was that the mice were established. You throw one out the house, another 2 were born that day. You can imagine. Poison.
