Unexpected material between wall and floor

I'd love to but its really awkward to photograph. It's only exposed from the inside in one small area and because its flush against the sole plate it doesn't really show up side-on.

Unexpected material between wall and floor

I live in a timber-framed house. The upstairs external walls are sitting on top of the plywood subfloor, which in turn sits on a joist. I have noticed that there is actually an additional material sandwiched between the wall sole plate and the subfloor. It is an approx 2mm thick rubber or...

    New shed base options

I have an area in the garden around 10ft x 20ft. I am thinking of putting a 6ft x 10-12ft shed on it. The area is bordered by neighbour garden wall on 1 side, neighbour garage on 1 side, and my own fence on 1 side, and is just dirt at the moment. I'd appreciate advice on the best way to cover...

Removing part of subfloor under stud wall

I have to admit, I've done exactly this elsewhere some years ago. I also didn't see much issue with it, if one screw can withstand 50kg shear strength then glue+screw every 300mm should surely be plenty of strength. I guess it could apply twist load to the joist it is screwed to, but I don't...

Removing part of subfloor under stud wall

Fair shout. I wasn't sure about sistering the joist, as I believe that is ideally done with coach bolts and I don't have easy access to the rear face of the joist. Is that right or can I just screw it?

Removing part of subfloor under stud wall

A section of upstairs ply subfloor was lifted for some plumbing that I had done. The board was cut flush with a stud cupboard wall that is sat directly on a joist. Time has come to re-lay the floor and I need something to fix onto. I was hoping to somehow cut out the ply to about 25mm depth...

    Easifill sanding issue

Filler was new-ish and well mixed yes. I think suction could be an issue. In the end I sealed the whole lot over with gardz and re-filled the 'step' with some of that ronseal pre-mix rubbish I had lying around. It ended up good enough for now, although I wonder how long it will last!

    Coving Dropped Ceiling

That is a big deviation. Is the ceiling lath and plaster, or boarded? Is the deviation caused by uneven joists, or by sagging? I probably wouldn't fit coving to that room if I could get away with it. If you try to 'split the difference' and whack 1cm more adhesive behind the left hand side it...

Joncryl Primer or Zinnser BIN for skirting & architrave?

Will pick up some Bedec and give it a whirl next time, cheers.

    Easifill sanding issue

I've used Easifill 45 a lot over the years but having a problem with sanding it flat on a particular wall. Had a fairly large patch (6" x maybe 1') of blown paint on a wall, so got the 10" taping knife and Easifill out to patch it flat. I'm not too fussy about feathering because usually this...

Joncryl Primer or Zinnser BIN for skirting & architrave?

I'd use ronseal 2-part personally on skirting. It starts to go off ridiculously quick though, so get moving! It sands pretty easy I find. On the paint subject, I tend to use knotting solution then Leyland Trade acrylic primer, goes on nice and dries quick, sands easy too. I still find OB...

    Light circuit power test

The same bulb has gone AGAIN, so 5 times in 14 months. Almost certain the fitting is killing the switches.

Best way to install shed on existing slab

Thought i'd give an update - decided to get rid of the shed completely and will lay a new slab of the correct size in a different location next spring. Cheers for the help though!

Best way to install shed on existing slab

They are pretty bad. Pricing it up now, and I'm probably looking at around £180 to restore it, whereas a brand new shed is probably over £400. Neither option is looking particularly good for my bank balance!

Best way to install shed on existing slab

Thanks for the feedback. My latest thought is to sack off the timber floor / bearers entirely, and instead lay 2 courses of bricks as a border, stick a DPM over the whole lot and fill the middle in with concrete. Probably cheaper overall and will last longer too. Sound alright?

Best way to install shed on existing slab

There's a 6ft square shed in my garden which was here when I moved in, and I'm looking for some advice on how to restore it to its former glory! The shed is situated on a concrete slab which is far too big (probably 10ft x 8ft), and this means that surface water can run / pool under the shed...

    Light circuit power test

I've been running regular light switches for around a month now. There are 2 wall lights with 2 bulbs each. One of these 4 bulbs seems the most prone to failure. It has just gone again, making it 4 times in around 1 year, whereas some of the others have never failed! Dodgy fitting causing all my...

    Soldering stainless steel

Thanks Burnerman. Is tin/lead solder inert once set? This part will potentially contact food.

    Soldering stainless steel

I need to solder a stainless steel nut onto a stainless steel bolt for a hobby project. It needs to be completely sealed, so not just a 'spot solder'. I haven't soldered anything since my school days and I'm not sure how to go about this. I have quite a few questions! I know you can get...
