    Warmseal double glazing security clips

Anybody know how to remove these security clips so I can get the glass out? Tried the obvious pressing down on the metal tab from the inside, doesn't seem to do anything. Half tempted just to cut the screws with a multitool, but would rather not. Cheers for any tips, Rich

    Do they check planning permission?

In that case I think I'll just build it the height that I want regardless. Worst case scenario all I have to do is set up the laser level and run a jigsaw along the fence panels to reduce the height... At least I can grow some 80ft Lleylandi in the meantime

    Do they check planning permission?

Hi folks, I'm in the middle of negotiating with my local council over a fence/wall on the side of a corner property. I want to build it 2m high for privacy, but they want me to make it no more than 1.3m high. It's currently a 0.5m concrete prefab fence with about 2m of overgrown hedge...

    Concrete door canopy replacement

If I were you I would knock up a little tiled lean-to / hipped type canopy, depending on the size you may not need the posts but they can look nice and add stability. The concrete one will likely have steel reinforcement inside and may be set into the brickwork so make sure care is taken when...

Plugs/screws for 20mm plaster over aerated concrete block

You can screw cabinets to 'hollow' plasterboard no problem. I reckon it's over the top to try to go through to the concrete block, and you may have a range of difficulties including damaging the plasterboard by squeezing it towards the blocks. The trick is, you need to distribute the load...

Best way to chase cables in?

Hi folks, I've got a chimney breast which I need to chase some TV cables in to. What's the best combination of products to use here? I was thinking of using something like a jointing compound to set the cables in and bring the channel up to a reasonable depth, then go over it with multi...

Can anybody identify these 1.5" 'buried' pipes? Photo.

Just a random thought but if you have a multi meter you could always check the resistance between these pipes and your internal gas/water pipes. Obviously if there's little or no resistance you know what they are. If there's a high resistance that wouldn't disprove they're gas/water pipes...

Building over manhole cover on public sewer?

I got one from a solicitor who in turn got it from a 'search' company, the other I got from a mapping company whom the water authority referred me to, they charged for the privilege. I've heard the council/water authority will make them available to you via their offices but you can't...

    Joists/ceiling how to level?

Obviously the flatter you can get it the better, but I wouldn't go mental over it. Having said that I'm sitting at the moment looking at a wall which you would never know isn't perfect, however, it's 5mm bowed. For a ceiling I think it will be very hard to notice if it isn't flat, so long...

    Unauthorised building on your property

If he went to court of his own accord the expense would be refunded to him anyway, assuming he won. Your theory about making the neighbour pay is invalid. Not least because he has no idea if the neighbour will even go to court. Not to mention the fact that building this temporary...

Building over manhole cover on public sewer?

Hi folks, Just to wrap this up, the water authority confirmed there's no manholes and are coming out to survey the pipe and check it's condition and depth. They charge £240 for this but will repair the pipe themselves (at their cost) if it's in poor condition in any way. They then charge...

    Reporting bad work?

You think people who nail floor joists into pebbledash and pitch a roof half way over a window will be getting their worked checked by the BCO?

Building over manhole cover on public sewer?

Doesn't the 2.27 at the northern manhole cover indicate the depth? The extension is single storey and the foundation depth will be 1m. The houses were built 1950 so I would assume the sewer is from then. I'm aware they may have conditions for building over, inspections etc, never the...

Building over manhole cover on public sewer?

Okay, I think I've safely concluded that the two manhole covers are in fact just inspection chambers for the 'private' gullies etc. I've got a new plan (shown below) which indicates the main sewer has NO manhole covers at all, contrary to the older looking plan which my solicitor had which...

Building over manhole cover on public sewer?

Yes it flows to the north. I guess the main point I was making is that inspection chamber #1 there quite clearly isn't a main sewer, but according to the plan it should be.

Building over manhole cover on public sewer?

Hi folks, Due to complete tomorrow. I know, I know, I should have figured all this out. The plot has thickened somewhat as I've just been round to the property and the manhole cover which, according to the plans the solicitor got from her searches, is a public sewer serving the other...

Building over manhole cover on public sewer?

An extension is going up but will be entirely within the blue line. If they'd let me build the extension over the sewer it would be good as I'd simply need to move the manhole cover and would still only have two turns in the line, else it needs redirecting as illustrated.

Building over manhole cover on public sewer?

Sorry I didn't make myself clear, they won't move it at their expense of course, you can either pay them or use an approved contractor. The building under the blue line is coming down.

Building over manhole cover on public sewer?

Yeah I will ring the water co tomorrow. I know they're the only people who can give me the real answer, but rather awfully I'm due to complete on this property in 48 hours time, and without the ability to build over this sewer it isnt worth buying. Just reading on the water company website...

Building over manhole cover on public sewer?

Hi folks, I was planning on building something over what I thought was an inspection chamber to a private drain, but have since discovered it's actually a manhole cover for a public sewer which serves one other property before passing over my land and heading off to join some others. The...
