    Went through underground electric cable.

Just FYI I was renewing my home insurance just yesterday and noticed it mentioned something about cover for my liability for services coming into and out of the house. You might be lucky.

Evolution Rage 3 - Accuracy tips

The thing about these saws is they aren't meant for neat woodwork, but with a bit of tweaking seems to suffice. You can't chuck a lump of 50x50x3 steel box section on a Kapex and slice it up. I've even cut 300mm wide 9mm thick steel plate on this saw.

    Went through underground electric cable.

Well there's your first problem. What you should have done is rang up and said "OI MY LECCY IS OFF COME FIX IT!" then when they arrived you could have simply smiled and said you've located the problem, dug a hole and exposed the rat-damaged cable ready for them to fix it, and inquired as to...

Evolution Rage 3 - Accuracy tips

Hi folks, Just thought I'd share this in case it's useful to others. Seems to be a few pages out there on the internet suggesting you can't adjust the accuracy of Evolution Rage saws. Had mine for a year now and it's never cut an angle right once and was a total pain in the arse to rotate...

    Concrete drive up to DPC!

I think the gravel idea might be worth a punt. Other option is to replace it really  Concrete drive laid up to DPC level and sloping towards the house, two biggest mistakes you can make really. I would presume in due time it will rut and crack so why not be done with it and get it...

Hatch fill & skim job. Feedback and advice for next time

You need to skim it and raise it ever so slightly above the surrounding area, then feather the plaster in as best as possible by spreading it thinly. As the plaster sets you can blend it in more using a wide soft paintbrush. Keep blending it using a bit of water as required. After this it...

Insurance claim pebble dash colour mismatch

Good luck with that  It's hardly glaring. It looks crap anyway. Paint it.

Using non pressure treated/non tanalised Fence Posts

I think paint is not very good in these kind of situations, you need a penetrative treatment really, ie some kind of oil or preservtive which soaks in. That's what pressure treating does - it forces the preservative chemical right into the wood. If you install them with the conc built up...

    What causes this? Pimples?

Thanks folks, few things to try next time there. I reckon I probably wet the wall too much with the PVA and/or got on the trowel too early.

garage build - how many skips?

Weigh a brick, there's about 60 per square meter, so there's the weight of your bricks. You can then make a similar estimate about your concrete slab if you know the rough thickness, I bet Google will tell you the weight of a cubic meter of conc. Then the grab hire can give you a quote :o...

Neighbour blaming me for works I have never done!!

I don't think you have to do anything? They clearly don't have a case if what you've said is true. Just ignore him/her.

    What causes this? Pimples?

I do notice lots of bubbles / air holes when I first spread the plaster onto the wall. I usually then pull back over the mix with the trowel in the opposite direction to "blend them out". In this instance however I did leave the mix sitting for a while (5-10 mins) as the PVA wasn't ready yet.

    Flaking brick walls

I see this quite often around here, it usually seems to happen to those really smooth plain red bricks? Would also like to know what causes it. I know it's frost but why does it affect some buildings/walls and not others. The white stuff is just salt and is common on new brickwork, just...

    What causes this? Pimples?

Hi folks, Been doing a fair bit of plastering lately and I'm getting quicker and better. Occasionally I have a problem when I get the first trowel on with this kind of spotty pattern appearing. They're like little volcanoes on the plaster. I can usually get rid of them eventually but...

    External brick walls not straight?

I think they'd have to be realllly wobbly for that to be a risk. Having said that, since you didn't quantify the amount at all in your post it could be one gust away from collapsing all together.

    Unauthorised building on your property

The implication you're making is that anybody can go and seize a piece of land for their use, and worse case scenario is that a judge makes them pay market rate for it? Are you sure that's right?

    Unauthorised building on your property

I like your thinking. Go a step further - have your friend haphazardly extend this outhouse with breeze blocks 10 feet into the neighbors garden, with the door on your friends side. When the neighbors tell him to knock it down, the obvious negotiation point follows :P

    gap around replacement window

If I were you I'd take this opportunity to make a flared window, they look nice and let loads of light in. Not keen on windows set that far forward in the elevation though, they look unnatural from the outside.

    Unauthorised building on your property

Personally, I would immediately demolish the offending part of it, before the neighbor even gets the idea there's a hope they'll get away with it. Tell the police you were round the pub telling all your mates about it and everybody and anybody was up in arms saying it should get demolished...

    Supporting purlins

The roof is straight and the house is 115 years old? Tell him to sod off. Crumbing mortar inside a loft? Show me a house that doesn't have this! It was never tooled/pointed when the bricks were laid... I guarantee you he won't be doing these works to rectify the supposed issue. Stand your...
