adding an extra light switch which is a 2-way switch and rep

The plastic patress box should have a brass earthing terminal in it. If it does not then connector block would be fine

    Garden Electrics

If you did go for 4mm you could have a 32A radial (Given the right conditions - volt drop etc - plenty of sockets possible then!)

    Garage Electrics

B-A-S was making the fair point that there is some theory concerned if this particular task is to be done correctly and safely!

Attn kendor; detached to avoid a discussion in For Reference

I see absolutely no problem with neutrals at switches - I'd like somebody to explain WHY it is 'bad practice' - sometimes the 3-Plate switch method can make life so much easier! Go on... once you try it you won't go back!

What formal procedure for changing a consumer unit?

You must also consider whether the existing circuits are in a satisfactory state for a new CU - e.g. the very small (say 100mA) neutral to earth leakage that had no effect on your rewirable fuses now instantly trips your new, shiny RCD! Always insulation resistance test all existing circuits...

    Boxing-in cables

Even if the cables are not already de-rated due to proximity of loft insulation, then (in my opinion) the added mechanical protection given by new trunking is a worthwhile trade-off for the de-rating caused by grouping them inside of it!

    Boxing-in cables

Just getting the cables out from under that insulation will increase the cable's current carrying capacity much more than any subsequent grouping would decrease it!

    Testing Earth

An EFLI test from the socket is the best way to determine the state of the earthing, although admittedly as others have said, it's not conclusive!

    fridge/freezer circuit

It's an open ended debate. There is no regulatory requirement to have appliances on a separate circuit to other (RCD protected) sockets. It is good practice to keep fridges & freezers off of the RCD for the obvious reason that a nuisance trip, at say 1am, when everyone is asleep would result in...

    RCD protection for TT system

Apologies Big_Sparks I misread your earlier comments and thought you had found an RCBO that only connects to phase (and somehow monitors Neutral via flylead!) - it doesn't make much sense but I know but I thought that's what you meant - my mistake! My main point still remains however - If the...

    RCD protection for TT system

Yes but when a single module RCBO is used, the circuits neutral is still connected straight to the neutral bar so any neutral to earth fault on that circuit it will still affect other circuits connected to that neutral bar as nothing physically removes the offending circuit's neutral bar/earth...

Can you really plaster over crimps?

The top picture is the crimp - this part connects the cable - in your case you'll need a red for the earth cable and two blue crimps for your live & neutral - assuming cable is usual 2.5mm Twin and Earth. BEFORE you crimp, slide enough heatshrink (bottom pic) over one cable to cover the...

Can you really plaster over crimps?

As long as the heatshrink is adequately applied and shrunk enough, it should be watertight. I agree though that if heatshrink was ignored or not properly applied then there is a risk of shorting in wet plaster so good point masona!

    cabling for socket too short

A JB would be ok but it would need to be 1. fixed to something and 2. accessible! Crafty has offered the best solution as once the cable is crimped/heatshrunk, it can be simply buried in plaster! You can get a proper ratchet crimper for £15-20 these days and if you've got a few more of these...

    Cooker through RCD

Agree Qed - when you re-wire a house, you want whatever cooker the customer has to work on your new supply. Old cookers can trip RCD's but still be perfectly safe to use (moisture in hobs etc). It would be embarrassing for the cooker to work on the ol' BS3036 you just ripped out but not to work...

    Asians

'Give the abuse a miss. It isn't clever. If you cannot prove me wrong (he can't) - then I must be right. Let's hear what you consider to be racism.' Sorry for the abusive tone Joe-90 I just feel quite strongly on the subject. I shouldn't have resorted to name calling but was offended by a lot...

    Asians

Since this subject is open to anyone, I want to put my opinion foward even though i'm new to this site! Re: the original subject of the thread - I think that as time passes, we will see more and more asian professional footballers as the sport's following increases in other parts of the...

    wiring shed

'That will require you to run a 6mm² 3 core SWA (Steel Wire Armour) cable. This supply can only come from the Consumer unit or the origin of your supply. Either way it MUST be RCD protected.' 1. This supply MAY be spurred of an existying circuit in the dwelling (not recommended!) 2. The...
