brick wall. levels beneath original. underpinn???

Hi I am reinstating this old post, because I have a very similar problem. I have had to lower external ground levels on my 18th century house, so that they are lower than internal ground levels. There is a narrow sideway where I have removed the concrete slab, but this leaves an adjacent...

17th Century Timber framed house - breathability

Yeah, I think so. Where there is rot in the frame, I think its the expanded metal, stapled to the studs, with inch thick cement render surrounding the building on four sides, I think is holding the building in shape and keeping it from warping... Thanks thatbloke, noted your other reply.

    Cement over old timber frame.

Will do. Thanks! It's in Hertfordshire. It's not listed, although it wouldn't surprise me if it were to get listed suddenly, as the planning applications I've put in to alter the newer parts of the building may draw the Conservation Officers attention to it!

    Cement over old timber frame.

Cannot see the photos you've posted but am wondering if you could tell me how you're planning to re-render, whether you're planning to strip off the cement render that's been applied... I have a similar project, a 300-400 year old house that's been rendered in cement over an old...

17th Century Timber framed house - breathability

Hi, I have a 16th Century timber framed house. It has been previously rendered with a cement render, onto expanded metal lath attached directly to the frame. Clearly, a timber frame ought to be ventilated, and this cement render does not allow the frame to breathe. Moreover, where the...

    Insulation on Timber Frame

Thanks. I don't suppose you would be able to tell me whether leaving the main 6 x 6 ring beam and the roof purlin exposed, thereby creating gaps in my vapour barrier, would be a problem?... Presumably condensation wouldn't travel through those and into the rest of the frame? Any condensation...

    Insulation on Timber Frame

Hi, Aware this is a very old post, but I have a house which is identical to this. It's much older though, around 1700 or so, and the upstairs is a timber frame which originally had lath and plaster on the outside, which has subsequently been replaced with expanded metal and render, attached...
