    Polystyrene

Many thanks Wotan and Cojack. I had some PVA so used that. I applied two neat coats and it has put a hard skin on the polystyrene, especially around the edges which tended to crumble more than the flat surfaces and did not have an adverse effect on the polystyrene. I 'm not saying it is a...

    Polystyrene

Many thanks Coljack but that solution is way over the top for my purposes. I just wanted to stop some tools falling about when I carried the case and if I had to go to those lengths, it would pay me to buy a purpose made toolbox. As it is I am just looking for a cheap way of restraining a few...

    Polystyrene

Many thanks for replying Regsmyth. I tried using foam but the only block foam I could get locally was the 'soft' type suitable for cushions etc and although I could cut down into the foam, I could not sculpture out the base of the recesses without making a real pigs ear of things. I thought...

    Polystyrene

I have lined a case with a polystyrene block with cutouts for various tools etc. What can I seal the polystyrene with to stop it crumbling. Solvent based products will probably melt it and I assume waterbased products will not adhere as polystyrene is waterproof. Any suggestions? :?:

    Head gasket repair

Many thanks DPS Services and Avocet. The car is not loosing water which I agree is the first thing to look out for but the car is sounding as rough as rats and I now think the problem is more serious. Daughters being what they are decided that daddy didn't know what he was talking about and...

    Head gasket repair

Many thanks Belladonna. Sorry I did not respond straight away but I requested that any reply to my post be emailed to me but I never got one! I appreciate what you say but I am no mechanic - not even a diy one, so it would be a garage job and the cost will be more than the cars worth being...

    Head gasket repair

My daughters Escort is showing early signs of a blown head gasket ie whitesh exhaust smoke. Would Radweld or similar help seal it, if only temporarilly ? Alternatively, can you suggest any other product. :?:

P reg Rover Metro 114 GSi - Thermostat

Many thanks moderator 9. However, I have managed to get hold of a Haynes manual which answers my thermo query and therefore do not need a response from the members.

P reg Rover Metro 114 GSi - Thermostat

I am trying to locate the thermostat on my grandson's Metro. The top hose which is about 30mm diameter leads from the top of the radiator to a spigot protruding from an alloy block with what I assume are the temp sensors attached but the metal block itself does not seem big enough to house a...

    driveshaft problem

I just HAD to reply Softus. I looked up that thread and could not stop laughing. Having been in the building trade all my life, I could just imagine the tales these lads told - T'was a real tonic and am passing it on to my brothers who have the same sense of humour. Many thanks.

    driveshaft problem

Hi Softus. I have had to summon up all my courage to write this post because I'm sitting here feeling a complete and utter idiot. Today I changed one front wheel and the sound stopped, so I owe you mate. Don't ask me what was wrong with it because I cannot see anything unusual but I am taking...

    driveshaft problem

Hi Softus and Neo. Before going any further with this, I am going to try Softus's suggestion about changing the front wheels and you are probably thinking why on earth have'nt I done this already. The reason is that the first thing I did was to explain the problem to the tyre garage I use...

    driveshaft problem

Hi Softus. 1. The frequency is related to one turn of the road wheel and the faster I go, the more frequent the sound. 2. As I dont get any physical viabration, I'll ignore the bent driveshaft theory. 3. Yes, I do mean axle stands - it was just easier to say 'chocks'. I can see the n/s...

    driveshaft problem

Thanks for responding Softus. I am relieved to note your comment about the amount of play not seeming to be excessive and I must admit there is no slackness or jolting when I pull away or decelerate and I do not get any physical viabration either through the gear shift, pedals or steering...

    driveshaft problem

I have just bought an M reg (1995) 1.4 RT auto Clio with a genuine 37000 on the clock and is in immaculate condition inside and out except for what I think are worn inner CV joints causing a very soft thump, thump, thump noise when I drive which I can best describe as though there was something...

    RCD/Earth query

Many thanks all of you and especially Widdler for putting my mind at rest and I shall certainly reconnect the earth to the CU. John D - the external unit is a Legrand but I dont think three 10mm tails would have gone into the older live CU oriface which probably explains why it was wired up...

    RCD/Earth query

Many thanks Crafty. If nobody else replies in the meantime, I will have a go when I see my D in Law next and will come back to you.

    RCD/Earth query

My daughter in law has an older Wylex CU originally fitted with cartridge fuses and later converted to plug in Mcb's. The local Council fitted a 9.5amp shower for the previous home owners who were disabled. As there was no more slots available, they installed a separate 45 amp RCD externally...
