Problem Bleeding Central Heating after Draining Down

Next time I drain down, I will fit drain value that will take a hose pipe next to the boiler, and then I will be able to use main water to fill the system up “bottom to top”, so as to remove the air locks between the boiler and the pump (and header tank). Once you have air locks out of the...

Are long 10mm pipes to kitchen sink OK?

I will have a kitchen sink that will be between 10m and 16m (depending on kitchen layout) from the main pressure hot water tank. Normally the hot water would be run in 22mm pipes, branching out into 15mm pipes going to each outlet. However I wish the water to be quickly at a useful...

Replacing a single radiator with one with a higher Btu

A double radiators need the pipes a little more forward of the wall then a single radiator. If you have plastic pipes, I expect they will fit OK, however copper pipes are less flexible so may need to be modified. If you have the space, you could also consider a taller radiator of the same...

After a powerflush - one rad not working

First check that the pin moves, if you still have problems, open the value all the way on that radiator and turn the values off on all other radiators, then see if you get heat. If so, then turn the other radiators back on – if you still get heat then you have cleared an air lock. If...

How does a parted cold “tank in tank” dhw tank reheat?

Thanks Gasguru, Am glad I was not going mad, nothing in the acv docs seem to say you need a very high output boiler if you wish to be able to use hot water while the tank is recovering. (Unless you have the boiler running most of the time, so having the return too low to get much condensing.)

Some very basic questions on how a DWH tank works…

I am not worrying legionella, it is the HSE that I am worrying about! Setting the tank stat to 55 degrees is not an option unless the HSE says it is OK. Having water at 65 degree at the top does not help, as at some point the hot water will run out, and the water from the bottom of the tank...

How does a parted cold “tank in tank” dhw tank reheat?

They are not that common in the UK. See http://www.acv.com/int-en/25_07/19/app.rvb

How does a parted cold “tank in tank” dhw tank reheat?

I don’t believe this will happen while the water in the outside tank is being pump through the boiler, due to the flow rate of the water. At other times it will clearly be the case.

How does a parted cold “tank in tank” dhw tank reheat?

As I understand it. A “normal” dhw tank heats from a coil at the bottom, as cold water sinks to the bottom when 75% of the hot water has been used, there is still some hot water at the top. As the tank reheats, the remaining hot water at the top is not disturbed, so can be used while the...

Some very basic questions on how a DWH tank works…

I think I must be missing something, but what This is my (mis)understanding… The HSE says that the ALL the water in the tank must be heated to 60c for at least 1hr each day to protect against legionnaires disease. I have never seen a DHW where the coil goes all the way to the bottom, or...

What to do with my basement floor?

The property is on a slope, my basement is mostly underground on 3 sides, but at the back it is just about at ground level. The land also slopes away from the property and is very sandy soil. The test pits I have dug show the sand under the edge of the floor to be damp, but very dry in the...

Are there any consumer units that have 3 bus bars?

Thanks John, You put it better than I could. Just add double waga type connectors at the top of each RCBO (for L,N, and E) so it is quicker to terminate the outgoing cables for the icing on the cake. (As I always spec all RCBO boards for properties I rent out, I consider them to be the...

Are there any consumer units that have 3 bus bars?

It seems daft that most consumer units require fly leads to be connected for RCBOs. So are there any consumer units that have 3 buses (Live, Neutral and Earth) that RCBO can plug into, alone with RCBO that allow the L,N,E to be terminated into their top?

Reasonable price alternative to Isomax clips.

The Isomax clips seem very good for reducing sound var ceiling while also not losing as much headroom as the normal resistance bars. However they seem to sell for double the price in the UK then the USA. Is there a reasonable alternative at a more reasonable price in the UK?

The most basic problem with DIY work

I know this is an old thread, but…. Remember in most of world there are no fuses in plugs. The freezer has therefore to be designed so it is safe with an unfused plug. For it to be legal to sell the freezer in the UK, it must have a CE mark, so must keep to the EU standards, this...

User Friendly Timer Unit or Switch

Is that truly what you want? Would it not be better to have a timer/thermerstat with a setback temperature? Then you can set it so the building is always above 15c. They often have a “boast” button that will increase the temperature to the “occupied” temperature when pressed. As...

Support your local registered gas engineer

This home owner does not see it like that! I have never had someone complain about their boiler not working telling me the name of the person that fitted it, they always tell me the manufacturer. The only time I hear someone saying who fitted a boiler is when BG did it, for some reason...
