Victorian Cast Iron Fireplace installation - Decoration only

Hope This Helps(!). Yes they can, but personally I would not use one unless there is a totally unacceptable draught in the room. If you look at the typical chimney construction in a 4-storey town house (we used to own one) the chimneys all have at least one bend in them to get round the...

Locking lid for Osma inspection chamber?

No, its more complicated than that. This manhole is (naturally) at the lowest point of my drain, but the ground rises towards the road so the drain is five feet down at that point. Hence I can't put the NRV there as it would be too far down to access it for inspection and cleaning. Also if...

Victorian Cast Iron Fireplace installation - Decoration only

Ideally you should have a ventilated cap put on the chimney pot to stop birds and stuff falling down. But if the fireplace is open anyway you will be able to clear up anything that comes down. You could install a chimney balloon to stop this and keep out draughts but if rain can get in the top...

Victorian Cast Iron Fireplace installation - Decoration only

Hi Xeres, We have done a similar job in two Victorian houses now so may be able to help Not familiar with the saw you mention but I share your concerns. The finished job will not look authentic anyway, the T-shaped hearth is typically made of three or four pieces to allow for a certain...

Locking lid for Osma inspection chamber?

Because we live at the bottom of the hill and our neighbours have already been flooded with sewage from a blocked public sewer, I plan to install a non-return valve in the foul drain from our house. The NRV will have to go upstream of the last manhole on our property as this is right up...

Kidd VHE will not fire and locks out for no obvious reason

Your bezel would probably have lasted longer! The temporary repair has now packed up but at least we had heat over the holiday cold snap and it confirms the pump itself is OK. The new dogs should arrive in tomorrow's post and with the sunny weather I am getting free hot water from the solar...

Kidd VHE will not fire and locks out for no obvious reason

Thanks for replying. It was the drive dog so I am glad I checked it before calling anyone out over a holiday weekend. It had split in two places, which I have held together with a binding of monel seizing wire until the new dog arrives in the post (all £1-70 worth!).

Kidd VHE will not fire and locks out for no obvious reason

Have just found this post which suggests a worn/failed oil pump drive dog could be the problem. How easy is this to replace?

Kidd VHE will not fire and locks out for no obvious reason

We have a Kidd VHE boiler with EDGB Inter 2011 burner, Satronic control box and Danfoss BFP21L3 oil pump. This morning the c.h. did not come on and I found the boiler had locked out. On pressing the reset button the motor runs for 14 secs without firing and then locks out again. After...

Lining a culvert with flexible drain pipe

Thanks HJ, some useful advice at last. A supplier has suggested the possibility of using twinwall cable duct, as it is more flexible and has a smooth bore, any thoughts? The MOQ is about £100 worth in either case. Question: would the 160mm o/d of this (or indeed the land drain) be a...

Lining a culvert with flexible drain pipe

Not true, at least in Devon, see http://www.devon.gov.uk/index/environmentplanning/floodriskmanagement/floodriskresponsible/floodriskrespondcc.htm

Lining a culvert with flexible drain pipe

I haven't found any way of convincing them to. Even though the water is all coming off the public highway they say once it is on my land it becomes my problem. I know the outgoing pipe is clear because the council have jetted it and also during heavy rain I have seen it running at full bore...

Lining a culvert with flexible drain pipe

There is a road drain which discharges into our garden and flows down a bank in a concrete culvert about 9 ins wide x 6 1/2 deep covered with slabs. eventually disappearing underneath the next-door garden in a 6 in earthenware pipe. The overall drop in level is about 2m over a distance of 17...

    Water in Corsa footwell

We have a 2005 Corsa 16v hatchback and in recent weeks have noticed water under the carpet in the offside rear footwell. There does not seem to be any obvious source of a leak e.g. round the door or window seals, and the two blanking plugs in the floor pan beneath the carpet are securely in...

    Price of second-hand slates

My neighbour has said he wants £1 each for the slates and £5 for the ridge tiles, so either he has been talking on the side to you guys or these are indeed the going rates! Thanks all for your help.

rain leaking through roof around join of neighbour's dormer

We have just had a dormer conversion done so have been through these hoops ourselves. The soakers in the corresponding place on our roof are not visible but I know they are there as I went up the scaffold and took pictures to show the neighbours. See...

    Price of second-hand slates

What should I expect to pay for second-hand slates? My neighbour has a quantity of 20 x 10 in slates left over from a dormer conversion which I want to re-use on a new garage roof to match the house. Both properties were re-roofed with new natural Spanish slates in 1993 so there should some...

    Roof vents and ridge vents?

I am having this debate also but have yet to find authoritative guidance for where a flat roof meets the original ridge line. However there is a useful summary of the overall requirements on the Glidevale web site. Download their roof ventilation guide from...

Mechanical fixing/dry ridge system for old angle ridgetiles?

We are having a dormer loft conversion done, with a flat roof meeting the original ridge line. To begin with, the specialist company told us they would trim the back wings of the old Victorian ridge tiles so they would fit securely and refix them in mortar. I have taken one up to the roof to...
