My money would be on blocked condensate pipe/trap, or spark generator, you'll need a gas man in for those.

Those plastic things are pants, change it for a brass one.

Probably just one of those things, just bite the bullet and change the whole valve, they're not expensive.

Looks from the pic to be the cold feed which fills the CH system, unusual to see that type of tap on it though, have a look in your loft, you'll see where it goes.

Sounds like hot water pre heat function may have been left on, check instructions for how to turn off.

Probably not, they are often different sizes. They're not difficult to replace with the right tools.

Never be afraid to push it in all the way.

Assuming they're hot/cold pipes, as opposed to heating pipes, I suggest you call an intelligent plumber (yes, we exist), explain the situation, and tell him you will have water off, and pipes bone dry for him to solder, it will take him 5 mins max, and charge you according to where you live...

Please don't put connections where they can't be seen, Speedfit or anything. Soldered joints only for me in that situ, and please protect the copper from the screed, it will kill the copper quickly

It sounds like you have some type of cable/bellows type flush valve that IS NOT a siphon. The easiest remedy is to try to find a replacement flush valve of the same make, you can then replace it in situ by unscrewing it from its bayonet fitting in the bottom of the cistern. Failing that, it's...
