    Restore hearth tiles

I discovered these original hearth tiles underneath a 70s fireplace I pulled out. They had been covered in slate and so had mortar directly laid onto them, which I think was the cause of this orangey burn which has eroded off the glaze. Is there any way to restore them? I dont want them to...

    Restoring wooden block flooring

Thanks, I'll give the cloth another go. Oddly enough I found old jeans to be the best material to buff with! I wonder if 3 coats of wax wasn't enough. The wood has been untreated and under carpet for the best part of 100 years

    Restoring wooden block flooring

Well I finally got a chance to repair, sand, treat with lye and then wax with Blanchon Hardwax Oil at the weekend. It's come up great after 3 coats of wax, buffing by hand - see pic attached. I've noticed now though that the shine has faded after 48 hours. Is this because I havent used a...

What colour hardwax oil for pitch pine

I've relayed the whole ground floor in block pitch pine. It sanded up a little orangey, we'd like it a little more mellow but not too much. Anyone have any experience/photos of waxing pitch pine? Colours are: American Antique Clear - Gloss Clear - Matt Clear - Satin Dark Oak...

    Restoring wooden block flooring

I'd assumed this white stuff on the bottom of the blocks was mold where moisture had got in over the years. Someone in a local flooring shop today told me they used to mix asbestos in with bitumen, and given I've just spent 2 weekends scraping it off I'm really hoping it isnt that!?

    Restoring wooden block flooring

That looks ideal. My blocks are more like 35mm deep though - assume the sensible thing would be to glue some additional strips to the bottom to increase the height so it rested on the screed?

    Restoring wooden block flooring

Since I started this thread, I decided to pull up the whole slab and start again. So now the underfloor is 50mm insulation, DPM, 5-6 inches of concrete and 3 of screed. I'm planning to start laying the blocks in two weeks time when the screed has cured fully. The one thing I'm not sure...

    Improving water pressure

It is both hot and cold that have poor pressure. The rising main is a 22 I believe. To give you an example, I plugged a sprinkler into the outside tap which is just by the rising main, and it barely covers half the surface area it's supposed to. I took a photo of the water meter, does...

    Converting outhouse

When we moved in the floor in there was just original brick laid on earth (not even any mortar). Obviously very damp etc, so we dug that up, laid 50mm foam + DPM and poured the slab on top. The level of the floor is about 150mm below the rest of the ground floor but we decided not to raise it...
