    Personalised Plate expired

I believe car needs an MOT before a plate can be removed - I've read of people paying thousands to get a pile of rust through an MOT just to get a valuable plate off. There are legalities around scrapping cars these days - otherwise I'd of had at least 3 of my inconsiderate neighbours cars...

    What's changed Astra 28.2

Following. Having failed to find it on last holiday to Cornwall I'm back - with a "satfinder" LNB, a rough idea of the direction (found one on a nearby house - 3 different phone compasses show 3 different Norths). Don't know whether the LNB is fitted in the correct position or how to adjust the...

How to install fire door closer

What he said - I've got a fire door between house a garage and want the closer on the garage side. I don't like those crappy spring things - they're massively tensioned when the door is open but have no pulling force to actually shut the door and rely on slamming it.

    Ridge tile meeting hip

As an expert DIY roofer (having done 2 reroofs in my life), I would say there's a fair bit of jiggery-pokery goes on up there to make things look right. When I did my junction I watched a YouTube video where the (Redland?) bloke had his perfectly mocked up roof and special saddle - 2 minutes...

    Removing multiple internal walls

Perfectly possible, might need some posts or masonry piers. With 3 storeys you need to consider your fire escape route - I don't think you can just "open plan" the staircase.

    Tracksaw advice

I have a cheap erbauer (refurbished eBay) and 2x 1.4m tracks (minimum for 8x4). The track system provides the level of precision that you just won't get from a circular saw pushed against a length of wood, or even a jigsaw following a pencil line - so it depends how important that is.

    Megaflo immersion heater

Yes, it does have an immersion and the stats etc, but presumably not wired to a supply when the cylinder was originally installed hence the seller saying it didn't have one - I guess on the basis that there was only one cable going into the cover. I'll strip the one out of the old cylinder for...

    Megaflo immersion heater

That's the new one. I estimate between 2012 and 2016. The old one about 25 years, so hopefully a bit more life before the baffle fails, or even better they've changed the material used and it won't fail.

    Megaflo immersion heater

This is why you should never believe anyone. I bought it off a heating engineer.

    Megaflo immersion heater

I've just got a megaflo Eco to replace my megaflo HE due to dissolving baffle. The Eco doesn't have an immersion fitted, so will the one from the HE swap over to it? Cylinders are indirect, 145L.

    Ceiling Joist Construction

Keep them spread along the right hand wall, but away from the chimney breast. The weakest areas of that ceiling is mid span, and the area where/if a joist is trimmed round the breast. Ideally they should be stacked directly on top of the masonry wall between the middle room and the bathroom.

    Boxing in RSJ

That's a massive downstand, wasn't it possible to put it higher. Anyway I'd make the cladding as "compact" as possible but agree not the first one.

Laminate work top step in from standard depth to slim

Just track saw it and chisel/sand out the chipboard underneath.

    Bay pole problem

Foam a D mould trim over the corner, maybe 50mm - buy from Eurocell, NON expanding foam from Eurocell (if they sell it) or Screwfix. Mask the frame as the foam is hard to clean off. You might need to silicone the edges of the trim (LMN from Eurocell) with a tiny bead.

Brickwork mortar 1:11 cement to sand mix?

Getting "all legal on it" - if the armchair lawyers on here can confirm a simple process that you can follow with a positive outcome in say less than 12 months I would certainly go for it. If the reality is a stressful, costly, protracted battle that could stop you moving house for years and...

Brickwork mortar 1:11 cement to sand mix?

Probably won't crack the bricks like all the others on the estate when the ground moves a bit. Personally I'd get them to rake out to 50/60mm in narrow vertical sections. Plenty of old houses with nothing but sand and dust between the bricks. I've "raked out" 90% of the joints in a large...

Considering a loft conversion in a shallow pitched roof, raising joists would impact useable space

Yes. 5.7m gable to gable is more reasonable. Probably better with the conventional two steels below the purlins than an arrangement with posts; the PWA act allows you to put steels on the party wall and in a modern house you should only need to use the leaf on your side. Timber span tables are...

Considering a loft conversion in a shallow pitched roof, raising joists would impact useable space

As mentioned above, their are various flexibilities with the stairs including headroom and pitch where access is to a single bedroom. I don't know what the span is side wall to side wall but if you can avoid the 9m gable to gable and PWA you could consider telebeams. Fairly thick layers of...

    Good Freeview recorder

Richer Sounds are doing Manhattan T4 refurbished on eBay for just over £130 so I've suggested one of those.

    Good Freeview recorder

Yes. But everyone else in the Family (who have sat dishes) have Humax kit and are happy with them but I think a bit above budget.
