    There normally closer and the fitting ends up in the wall. But if it's on the roof not to be seen and you feel better about it there's no harm, just put a couple of 45 degree bends above to bring it back to the wall.

    Make sure you use proper cutters to cut the copper and not a hacksaw otherwise the rough edge could push out / damage the rubber o ring inside the fitting.

    What do you mean by second hand?? I think you will struggle finding a gas safe engineer to fit it for you, what work is involved in the 4-5k quote as that seems excessive to me?

    I very much doubt it is due to sludge. Does the boiler always fire up fine when you turn the heating or hot water on, or does it fail to turn on.

    When you put the system cleaner in did you drain the heating system down a bit first.
