Repointing advice - style colour etc

Not sure if that’s for me or Dan, but the joints on my wall are a joke, some of them 18mm, some others (perps) are butted directly with no gap. Must have been a Friday job back in the 60s

Repointing advice - style colour etc

It’s the same as the ones you’ll see if you google brick jointer, it’s just old as had it about 20 years

Repointing advice - style colour etc

Fwiw, I’ve now started mine (out of sight test area) and this doesn’t look particularly grey. 5:1 local merchants usual red building sand : cement.

Best way to fix plasterboard to underside of lintel?

Solid bed of dab adhesive on both board and lintel

    Mortar protection

Thanks. Water repellency is better than nothing, the area is pretty much entirely sheltered by the fairly deep barge soffit overhang at the apex.

    Mortar protection

I’m repointing the entire gable end wall of my house, but the very top couple of feet triangle is too high for me to reach and use a grinder using any means that I’m comfortable with, and the pointing seems rock solid presumably because it’s protected by the barge soffit overhang. I was...

    Resin drive question

If they’re actually bothering to look into it they’ll probably claim it should have an aco on the pavement boundary (or should have had a planning application). You might be able to make out it was done before the planning regs changed to need this (don’t think it was that long ago) Edit -...

Repointing advice - style colour etc

You can get yellow building sand, my local merchant has it although their normal is red. I’d imagine that’s going to give a different final colour. Don’t use sharp. Aside from that I think newer work just looks grey compared to old stuff. I’m about to do a large area on my place and I’m...

Repointing advice - style colour etc

This is some that I did ages ago that I’d call weatherstruck. Not to be confused with what Stuart is referring to this is just gone over with the trowel and the snots brushed off. (And I’m not claiming it’s any good lol)

Repointing advice - style colour etc

I’ll ignore the moaning about how rubbish we are/the forum is… As said, “cut and struck” is the very sharp, protruding, pointing which Stuart is the expert on but as said above, basic weatherstruck is the existing which you’re trying to reproduce. It’s actually very close to a completely flush...

Hope it’ll be less bad next efflorescence season then

    Efflorescence?

My blue brick wall I built last year has got various bits like this on it. Anything I can do about it? Tried brushing it off a bit which had zero effect. Ta.

Repointing advice - style colour etc

At the risk of repeating myself, all the pictures apart from the bit you did are weather struck pointing. You did bucket handled. That’s your fundamental issue. See my earlier post. Use a pointing trowel, practice weatherstruck.

    Mortar raking

Yeah, did hope it may be as easy as that, but this one’s the annoying combo of ridiculously soft patches that come out with screwdriver, but mainly rock solid so will need the grinder. Don’t want to risk just patching the odd bit, as I’m going to build a polycarbonate roofed shed/bike shelter...

    Titan dust extractor without filter?

Thanks guys, sounds like I’m better sticking with how it’s meant to be used

    Titan dust extractor without filter?

makes sense, might try keeping the filter and ditching the bags and see how it goes
  18. 2

    Titan dust extractor without filter?

Yeah, probably. I’m not sure whether the bag filters out the bulk of the dust or the filter does

    Titan dust extractor without filter?

Planning on using my old titan extractor to get as much dust as possible when raking out the joints before repointing. Is there any benefit to not using the filter, or not using a bag? I’m thinking it’s going to kill the filter pretty quick but better that than killing the machine… it’s out in...

Repointing advice - style colour etc

The latest pic is weather struck, completely different pointing style. Done with a pointing trowel. More common on old/reclaimed brick. Yours is bucket handled/half round. More common on newer stuff. Doing it completely flush is different again, where you rub it down with sacking/brush...
