    Robot vacuum cleaner

Wow! That's quite a long time to be thinking about it!

    Pavement parking.

Well the footpaths along our road, and many others in this area, have been perfectly fine for over a hundred years and are unlikely to be relaid in order to make them narrower! The system works well, assuming of course that most motorists bear in mind to leave a sufficiently wide area of the...

    Pavement parking.

I'm afraid that if that were the case in the case of some narrow roads parking would be impossible. In my opinion, parking with two wheels on the pavement is a practical solution, providing that the space remaining on the pavement is sufficiently wide to provide enough space for wheelchairs...

    Drive gates in the countryside

I think one wide gate for cars and a narrow gate for pedestrians would be most convenient, though presumably you'd have to add a post between the two.

    Swift Bricks

Perhaps so. On the other hand, I have had both magpies and blackbirds visiting for a year or two, so it could be that the magpies are happily feeding on what I offer them and find that easier than raiding the nests of blackbirds. I hope so, anyway.

    Swift Bricks

I'd be very happy to do that but, as AJS says, we don't have swifts around here. I do, however, put bird food into a hanging basket every day: wood pigeons, robins, magpies, blackbirds, etc.

    2010 version of Word

I'm quite happy for those who want to pay every year for MS Office. I'll stick with LibreOffice, thank you.

    2010 version of Word

LibreOffice I have MS Office 2007 installed, but for some reason which I don't understand it suddenly stopped working properly, and now takes around five minutes to open a document! Obviously, I couldn't really continue using the programme and I wasn't prepared to purchase a new, up to date...

Scratches on top surface of dashboard

Thanks Old Salt. I shall try your second option. Slawit, thank you. I shall try that method too, whichever I can get hold of first.

Scratches on top surface of dashboard

I hope this helps. Either picture shows the damage, but if you cross your eyes, the two together will form a 3D image, which might help. I'd be very grateful for any advice, Old Salt. As for Slawit's suggestion above, perhaps it might do the job.

Thanks. I'll take a photo when I get the chance.

Scratches on top surface of dashboard

The other day, I purchased a plank from B&Q which I could get into the car only by placing it longwise in the cabin with the front edge on top of the dashboard. Stupidly, I didn't put anything underneath the wood, and consequently there are some small scratches on the plastic surface. The...

    Alternative to Windows 11

Although I am happily running Windows 11 without any problems, this discussion has alerted me to possible future problems with Windows. Although I am not intending to make any changes yet, perhaps some time in the future if things change, I am grateful for all the suggestions offered here...

Getting electric shocks in kitchen - immediately after walls have been plastered. (Only when contact made with fresh plaster)

Talking about touching the wet plaster to isolate the fault, do what electricians do: wear rubber soles and keep the other hand in your pocket!

Getting electric shocks in kitchen - immediately after walls have been plastered. (Only when contact made with fresh plaster)

I agree. I'd call in an electrician who can isolate the problem BEFORE the plaster dries!

Getting electric shocks in kitchen - immediately after walls have been plastered. (Only when contact made with fresh plaster)

I'm not disagreeing with tracing the fault, but when the plaster dries there probably won't be any more shocks! On the other hand, feeling the plaster in various places might lead you to the rough area of the damaged cable. Perhaps an electrician with the appropriate meter will locate the area...

Cat flap cut through weakens single skin brick wall?

Ooh no! Oh, I assure you that he was glaring at you with intent... serious intent. You're lucky that you survived.

Walking down a railway line due to power cut?

That's interesting. Is it true that India no longer routinely uses steam engines for regular transport?

Cat flap cut through weakens single skin brick wall?

Ours is like your old flap in that it can be pushed open from inside. However, on the outside the flap is inset by 2 or 3 inches and cats would have to have a good reach to pull it open. Nothing has ever managed to get in yet, anyway - apart from our own two cats.

Walking down a railway line due to power cut?

I believe India still uses steam trains. What a good idea, although I bet there won't be much support here especially from the firemen and possibly also the drivers. I believe there used to be the necessity to get up 'before bedtime' to get the things ready! Nevertheless, there are still a...
