Walking down a railway line due to power cut?

I'm no expert, but I'd have thought that the rails are earthed and the electrical power would be input from lines above, then travel to the motors and then to earth via the rails. If that is the case, it should be perfectly safe, but in any event the power is off anyway what's the problem?

    Electric shock

I have. As a child, I once touched our three bar electric fire and received a shock. I touched one of the wheels at end of the a bar and felt a shock but fortunately wasn't killed, probably because I wasn't earthed being knelt on a thick carpet and touching nothing else. Strangely, none of...

    Laptop battery issue

Thank you both. I think I'll continue as I am, as I rarely need to use the battery other than for a short time if I'm using the laptop away from the charger.

    Laptop battery issue

Sorry if I am distracting from the initial question, but I usually use my laptop with a mains transformer. So far no problems, but would continued use in this way eventually make the battery lose its life?

    Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Yes, you are completely correct. I went to light the hob again and, yes, of course it is blue. My mistake was due to the fact that the wife does all the cooking.

    Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Blue. They are yellow on our hobs.

    Front dash cam dangling again.

Thanks. Helpful advice should the situation arise. Incidentally, when we sold our old car last year I just left the mount where it was. I didn't ask for any additional payment for it!

    Front dash cam dangling again.

I have a Nextbase camera, but I wouldn't use the suction cup as I have heard so often of them falling off. I use the adhesive patch and, at least so far, the camera has never fallen off. Of course, it is important to make sure it's going in the best place because it isn't easy to pull it off...

    Ring Doorbell Alternative

It has just occurred to me that our door bell comprises two receptors, each which plugs into a 13A socket, and a push button which, when pressed, sends a signal to the receptors. The amazing thing is that the push button does not require any form of electrical power, not even a battery. It is a...

    Strange Socket In Hospital

This is quite strange. It occurred to me that it could have been MRI, but a couple of things just don't work. You said a tiny room, but an MRI is a large piece of equipment. Also, they could hardly work on you because in order to image what they were doing they'd have to be doing it inside a...

    Strange Socket In Hospital

I think it's usual to wear lead-rubber protection underneath their green theatre dressings. The lead protection could transmit infections.

    Strange Socket In Hospital

Oh yes, it is a permanent pacemaker. I was assured that it should last at least 13 years before replacement. Yes, it was a fixed (well, movable) X-ray tube above the table (actually, it may have been below with the image intensifier above, I don't remember now). In any event, I'm still here so...

    Strange Socket In Hospital

Back then. As it happens, I have had a pacemaker implanted, nearly three years ago now. Yes, they used screening (which I asked to watch, and was permitted to). I suppose they had to occasionally have a quick look to ensure both leads had ended up in the correct places.

    Strange Socket In Hospital

The screening units I have used in the theatres plugged into normal 13A outlets. As for screening, I remember only using occasional short bursts, efficient only for the surgeon to see exactly where he was. After all it was him, as well as the rest of us, who was being irradiated. In fact, he...

    Strange Socket In Hospital

I bet you wouldn't. The (very) ancient 'gas tubes' required being run for several minutes in order to produce an X-ray image (on film). I found the way they worked to be very interesting and educational. Of course, that was donkey's years before my time.

    Repaint shower tray

Marge has now said that she'd like to remove the shower cubicle: tray, glass, and even the tiles (which are in good condition), but keep the shower head and controls. I'm just keeping quiet for now in the hope that she'll forget all the cost and disruption!

    Strange Socket In Hospital

Naturally. Despite all the progress that has been made since the discovery of production of X-rays in the 19th century, X-ray radiation however it is produced and controlled is still dangerous in excess to the human body! However, if patients are concerned about this, they should realise that...

    Strange Socket In Hospital

Other than the specific power outlet for those particular mobile machines (and possibly suitable for other brands?), I never troubled to find out anything about rated power outlet or even voltage. I'm not sure that there are any people still alive now who were involved in their production or...

    Strange Socket In Hospital

I was, in the olden days. Our mobiles (some called them portable, but I'm damned if I could pick one up!), were 'Deans', great solid things, had enormous circular three pin plugs which had to be plugged in for the things to work. Later during my tenure, we received a couple of more modern ones...

    Repaint shower tray

We have a walk-in shower which, although about twenty years old, still works perfectly. Unfortunately, the floor of the tray has begun to wear and the white finish has begun to wear away in the middle of the area. We were advised to paint it with exterior white emulsion, but although (under...
