Bathroom ceiling light melted wiring - likely cause?

No-one has mentioned the possibility of a loosely tightened screw on to the red wire. Or am I talking a lot of rubbish?

Manhole drain base blocking with build up of toilet paper.

We have had a similar problem over Christmas with very slow clearing of the toilet when flushed. We had a very helpful gentleman (plumber) who examined the situation and rodded appropriately, and discovered that our problem also was toilet paper. He cleared it and it once again works properly...

Perhaps if the 'earth wire' can be found at the source, and checked for continuity of course?

    Live TV without aerial?

I agree. We have two televisions. Both are connected to our aerial on the chimney stack but that is rarely, if ever, used. We have Virgin Media internet and a couple of extenders (though these are not absolutely necessary) and almost entirely our TV viewing is via the Internet and, as said, a...

    Possible mouse noise

I once had such a problem and I tried spraying WD40. Didn't kill the mice, but it stopped them squeaking.

    Ooops!

I've often wondered about this. I can only assume that way back in history everything was regarded as male, female or neither. As I've mentioned, I shouldn't be surprised if, as things generally tend to become simplified, the concept of gender (other than in humans and animals) may well disappear.

    Ooops!

Oh yes. Perfectly simple! On the other hand, despite being aware of all the varieties of 'the', how do you know which of the German alternatives to use for any specific noun or object? I know some through regular use, but when a new one comes along how do you know whether it in masc., fem., or...

    Ooops!

Yes, you're absolutely correct. If I ever need to (attempt to) speak German, I shall probably use the incorrect version of 'the', but the important thing is that at least I should be understood. Perhaps in time this aspect of the German language will also become simplified.

    Ooops!

Interestingly, I like German and enjoyed it at school. One drawback, however, is remembering the appropriate definite article: der, die, or das. I expect (and hope) that one day all three will eventually be combined into a single one to make things more simple. After all, with all this...

    Defeating the squirrels

Yes, we get pigeons and several other birds happy to land on the ground and wait for bits of food to fall. Of course, the small birds are quite messy eaters! Personally, it doesn't bother me if they poo all over the place, as it's only on soft earth. If it does bother you, the same...

    Defeating the squirrels

Oh, yes. There is no doubt that the cone effectively prevented them from climbing up the pole from the ground. Good luck, and I'm sure they won't be able to eat the bird food even if they can get to the feeders, as the things the bird perch on will sink down under the weight of a squirrel (or...

    Defeating the squirrels

Mine came with a cone, but it didn't help too much because the squirrels could jump across from a nearby tree and land on the cone. They then tried to climb up the pole and tried to reach across to the hanging feeders but couldn't quite reach. After a few days of attempts, they just gave up...
