Yes, hot water seems to be fine. You can hear the pump because there is no water in there. I'm wondering if moving the radiators has stirred up some detritus which has blocked a pipe.

It's not crumply at all. It's probably the best looking concrete I've ever seen! I might try drilling into it to see if it's layered. Would the DPM be at the same level as the damp proof course in the brickwork? Is it the same thing?

Thanks for your help! I tried B&Q but they didn't have them, they did have the tape with the metal strips though. In the end I bought a some MDF for the front of the chimney, I'll still use plasterboard on the sides, but the MDF should hold up a bit better on the edges. :)
