Damp - Victorian Semi. could several layers of exterior paint be an issue?

I've seen the PeelAway 1 / 7 products - but I know I'm a lazy git so might pay someone to do the back of the house with it..

Does a new cooker extractor need a plug socket if it has a plug?

I've no idea but the tiles are being changed and the handyman suspects the plaster will come off with them :) I'll see if I can get a pic via phone or action cam (and try not to drop it!).

Does a new cooker extractor need a plug socket if it has a plug?

Would it helped if I took a picture behind the isolator switch ? Had a new metal fuse box + RCD put in last year too BTW.

Does a new cooker extractor need a plug socket if it has a plug?

    > Previous owner put in metal mains Sockets in the kitchen I probably shouldn't have mentioned this aside. .. I confused everyone. The plastic screws are in the plastic light switches on the unearthed lighting circuit only. The Kitchen mains sockets is separate and newer. I only mentioned the...

Does a new cooker extractor need a plug socket if it has a plug?

Ah, light switches are standard plastic ones. Only the kitchen has metal switches / sockets on the mains circuit (not lights). So there is no exposed metal at all on any light switches in the house. And it will be a clause in my tenancy agreement not to tamper or change switches nor install...

Does a new cooker extractor need a plug socket if it has a plug?

Ah whole house really needed re-wiring - I think its original wiring in 1930s house? Plastic screws was the cheap stop-gap option for certificate. I had limited budget. He also downgraded main fuse from 30 something to 18amps IIRC (approx number from memory!) Only the kitchen has relatively...

Does a new cooker extractor need a plug socket if it has a plug?

Some pics. Previous owner put in metal mains Sockets in the kitchen only but all tested and signed off. last year. (unrelated note - all light switches are plastic but the electrician also made me put in plastic screws on all light switches because the lighting circuit is not earthed ) [edited...

Does a new cooker extractor need a plug socket if it has a plug?

I can just see a live cable behind the plaster. I've wrapped the end with amalgamating tape. EDIT: Just confirmed there is an isolator switch on the wall I've never used and it does appear to make the cable live (using AC proximity test tool on laser tape measure)

Does a new cooker extractor need a plug socket if it has a plug?

I have removed an old extractor (installed by previous owner) to be replaced with a new one. The old one did not have a plug but the cable was attached to a live cable behind the wall using a connector block. My handyman says the new extractor fan has to plug into a plug socket? Does it...

Damp - Victorian Semi. could several layers of exterior paint be an issue?

Hi my folks live in a Victorian Semi in London. There is lots of damp on multiple walls at the rear of the house. I've been reading about the 'Rising Damp Myth' and similar skepticism. E.g. http://www.buildingconservation.com/articles/risingdamp/risingdamp.htm...

Neighbour's new pitched roof draining onto my flat roof -no gutter

Just in case it becomes a case of their roofer saying its OK, one option might be to get another roofer to do a 'survey of works' - basically put their own assessment in writing. Might cost about £100 but give you some clout. Maybe council building services might do something cheaper?

Gaps in replacement tiles after chimney removal

I've learned a bit more whilst looking for a good roofer to fix the issue. Problems started with their carpentry/timberwork (no ridgeboard, rafters extended with screws and 1 foot overlap) etc. by the time they got to the tiling they had no chance. Two roofers I've seen since said I shouldn't...

Gaps in replacement tiles after chimney removal

@noseall - agree - the new tiles are redder and mostly hidden by the scaffolding. This has gone now. I've attached back elevation piccy. and one showing a tile with a crack in the groove. FWIW I've not paid roofer yet. They've resisted all attempts to re-bed tiles. Saying they 'come out if any...

Gaps in replacement tiles after chimney removal

The annoying thing is both myself and the neighbour had tiles which were in better condition than the ones he used, but he was keen to use his stock. Only realised after they had been laid how poor his ones were by comparison.

Gaps in replacement tiles after chimney removal

Hi, Tiles are clay FWIW A bit more info: The reason for removal is the previous owner of my house had removed chimney breast and only supported the stack with a wooden lintel. 10 years later, I'm planning to rent the house now and wanted to make sure it is safe. (long story involving council...

Gaps in replacement tiles after chimney removal

@catlad : Outside Pictures + 1 Before. - excuse my tatty soffits .. @noseall : Is that pointing or something else? If anything was on the existing roof it has long since disappeared. FWIW These are all 1930s ex-council houses , and the ones that are still council owned recently had all of...

Gaps in replacement tiles after chimney removal

Hi recently had a party chimney removed. The gaps in the replacement tiles look far bigger than existing ceiling. Does new bedding look as bad as I suspect? Also the party wall is not flush to roof. Is there any regulation around this? Or should I fill gap myself with concrete? Or get builder to...
