    Where's the front?

If you think it's the 'front' then it probably is the 'front' and you need planning permission. So you need to start thinking it as the 'back' and continue that line. Is putting it on the new 'back' going to be an eyesore for everybody else? If so then you shouldn't do it.

Building a new one bedroom home on my parents land?

Precedent only applies to planners if it supports a decision they've already made. I reckon the only way you'll find this out is to chuck in a plan and if (when) it gets knocked back then go to appeal which is where you'll get a more impartial decision. As any new house is going to be worth a...

Lack of Planning Permission - Extension on Ground Floor Maisonette

Yes I read that and you can requote it until the cows come home and I'm still not sure. Is there polycarbonate sheeting in between your balcony and his roof or is your balcony the roof. When you say 'pitched' is that 'at an angle' or 'covered in bitumen'. I'm trying to help so if you can help...

Lack of Planning Permission - Extension on Ground Floor Maisonette

The extension is lawful, but in any event that's totally irrelevant to the other problem which is the damp. Not sure I get you. I'm assuming your balcony was there first. Are you saying the downstairs flat is using your balcony for the roof of the extension.

Do I need calculations for Building to Control to 'pass off'?

write to truss company saying calculations required so you can comply with the law, if not provided it will cause you harm, and they have duty of care to prevent that. they can prevent that by simply providing calculations as their web site says they will do for free. if they refuse you will...

    laundry chute.

There are definitely regulations - they are just written to be very broad and do not get down to the detail of stuff like laundry chutes. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2010/2214/schedule/1/made For example, go down to B3, Internal fire spread (structure). It doesn't mention any...

    bay window wall disaster

Unless you insulate that wall it will always relatively cold. The hotter the air inside your house, the more water vapour it can carry, so perversely when it hits a cold spot more water can potentially condense out. So you need to reduce the amount of water in the air inside your house...

    RSJ

There's a web site which will do all the calcs you need for £29 and email you a document, have a google. Give a copy of their report to building control (who will have them checked anyway) and another to somebody who sells long lumps of steel and they will give you a price. If the foundations...

    RSJ

You don't need a structural engineer to do the calcs (or you don't round here), you can do them yourself if you like, then BC will have them checked before they accept them. If it's just a beam holding up a floor the calculations are quite straightforward.

Does this plumbing quote sound reasonable?

Sounds like a lot to me. What you describe is DIY work, why not use this site to get help on how you can sort it? You could get a good start on what you need towards a decent toolkit for half the price of what you have been quoted.

Help Needed to Identify a Pipe

A 21.5mm pipe has an outer diameter of 21.5mm .............. Metric is outer, imperial is inner. The benefit of specifying the outer diameter ensures they all fit the connectors, the inner diameter depends on the thickness of the wall which might be dependent on pressure rating.

Planning Refusal, Council considers residential garden to be open countryside.

If the planners are using 'curtilage listed' as a reason to reject the application then I'd be thinking the planners simply don't like the idea but haven't got any planning law reason to reject so are making things up to suit them. Maybe it really is an eyesore, maybe the neighbours are mates...

Guttering dispute with next door neighbour

Well it makes no sense, perhaps the neighbour spent the five grand and is using his house insurance policy legal cover to recover it from you. Wait for the solicitor's letter and decide your next steps (which should be through the doorway of your own solicitor)

Domestic Electrical Installer Course (18 days)

At thirty years old you're still a spring chicken. You do need to get some exams under your belt and that 17th edition one is the first to take and by far the driest. Gawd it's boring stuff. It's "open book" though so you take all the answers into the room with you, you have to become an...

Quote for new consumer unit and cooker point

Size of the bonding cable to gas and water is dependent on the size of the main supply cables (tails) coming into the consumer unit. As he's putting in 25mm tails he's correct in putting in 16mm earth cable and 10mm bonding cable. https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Figures/Tab5.7.htm Ask him how...

Planning Refusal, Council considers residential garden to be open countryside.

Well I don't know whether what you want to do is 'good' or 'bad' in planning terms as I haven't seen what it looks like. What do your mates think if asked to give an honest opinion? However I reckon it's debatable whether a barn (later converted) which is a hundred or so meters from a manor...

Guttering dispute with next door neighbour

You told us their solicitor was dealing with it now, why would you write to the insurance company? Remember, you don't have to prove anything, they do. However you also need to do all you can to prevent it getting to court otherwise you'll just annoy the judge so don't hold things back to...
