joist hanger vs multi truss hanger

I'm penny pinching again - well pound pinching in this case.... Going to be hanging 225mm floor joists of a wooden central beam and ledger plates in other areas. Have noticed the traditional joist hangers - the ones that tend to be long and wrap over the top are about £35 for 50 of them. There...

    Treatex hardwax oil issue

I got an alert to say you’d responded. Was a satin finish. This went over the colour tone wood stain by treatex. I must say it’s held up pretty well. It’s not an often used room so limited traffic. But still looks good. However, on rereading the thread it reignited the pain! My only advise...

    Rafter ties/ceiling joists

Seeing as I need ceiling joists they can be belt and braces ties too.

    Rafter ties/ceiling joists

Thanks for your clarification. By the way, do you play Fortnite? Are you over 13?

    Rafter ties/ceiling joists

Not to question your knowledge, but on my reading, I thought collar ties were in the upper third of the roof and didn’t offer much in the way of preventing spread. My thought was that ceiling ties were up to the lower third of the roof and still acted to prevent spread. I was wondering if my...

    Rafter ties/ceiling joists

If my dormer roof was a 45 degree pitch, instead of adding rafter ties sitting directly on the wall plate, can I add these ties 1/3 of the way up? Trying to maximise ceiling height. Dormer will be 3600mm wide, 45 degree pitch and have a ridge beam (as opposed to board). Total height of pitched...

Is this what you’re on about. Got my crayons out.

    How to pack floor joists?

Gable one end, hipped the other. But for the area I’m talking about, gabled.

    How to pack floor joists?

Wall plate on external walls that the current 4x2 ceiling joists sit on. Nothing on the mid point supporting wall. Just brick that sits level with the lath and plaster. As I'm typing I'm realising that raising the mid point supporting wall 75mm merely requires packing of some sort. But raising...

    How to pack floor joists?

Runs front to back sitting on external walls. Has brick piers built off it that support the purlins.

    How to pack floor joists?

Pretty much as the title. Going to be putting 225x47 joists in the loft. They will sit on external walls and mid point on supporting walls below. Mid way in my loft is a massive 300mm steel that will be not used in floor support, but obviously I want my joists to sit fractionally above this...

    Expanding foam

I'd very much like to know if it was..... Getting prices for timber as we speak so I can brighten up people's day as i post along the journey. Already starting to adjust the SEs calcs..... I must know better than him. I've been on YouTube again.

Building reg drawings - will this do?

I appreciate the thoughts on fire safety…. I too am acutely aware of fire in my job;) , but fire doors on every room on the escape route are only any good if every door is shut of a night time. Very few people do this. Plus, fires most of the time occur in the kitchen and from people smoking and...

Building reg drawings - will this do?

Post Grenfell? I’m not going that high up. Can’t really see any comparison. Plus a sprinkler system will put insurance premiums up and do little for the safety of my family. Early detection and bailing out is key. Just hope the inspector sees it that way.

Building reg drawings - will this do?

Are you a building inspector Woody? Imagine you landed my job…. That would wipe the smile off your face! I don’t think I’d really be asking can I do this/that. I’ve kind of got the jist in my head and use the forum to do that. The only reason a specific private inspector came up was with my...

Building reg drawings - will this do?

Thanks all. A building notice might be the best bet. I did full plans for my extension, they took me ages to draw up and served little purpose to me. I suppose some peace of mind, but I know roughly what insulation, fire regs etc I need to adhere to. Kind of  The fees for full plans...

Building reg drawings - will this do?

Cheers for your reply I can do an insulation cross section pretty easily. Might even get on off the internet. Only has to be generic I suppose to show compliance. stairs I can also do. why the elevation? I thought that was more planning (which I don’t need) rather than regs.

Building reg drawings - will this do?

Embarking on a self build loft conversion. Had to get the structural calcs done for the floor and roof which seem pretty detailed. Enough for me to know what to put where to stop me destroying the house and hopefully to satisfy a full plans approval. I was about to start some drawings for...
