How do you know what needs doing each year at a service?

You will always get rip off garage owners and the like writing on here to scare folk into getting things done which are often not necessary. It will be interesting to see what tactics they adopt when everything changes to electric and their services are no longer required. N.B. An old friend has...

Replacing single socket with double - attaching box to wall.

Why go to all that trouble and expense, in my study, I just use a four socket extension lead with surge protection.

    Lead Flashing

I have to say that in my present house (only two years) I have a very similar lean to extension but the lead is not really wide enough - it's about 90 mm. With what one might call normal rainfall, there is no problem but if there is a combination of heavy rain and a southerly strong gale the...

    Felt roof leak

Sorry can't really say as I don't claim to be an expert but I did most of it that looked suspect at the time.

Out of square door frames with glass window above.

Seen this sort of thing in the past and it would not have been like that when the house was new. I reject the "sinking" idea and suspect that Mr Bodger and his mate have been at work at some time in the past. Usually Mr Bodger does not possess a spirit level or a set square and has no idea how...

    Felt roof leak

Yes and yes! Had similar problem on daughter's kichen extension while back. Bought a tin of black bitumen paint from Wickes and spread on a couple of coats as thick as I could then sprayed it silver (to protect from sunlight). That was five years ago, still not leaks and roof is quite exposed.

How to fix these gravel boards?

    1. Gravel boards are NOT expected to rot if they have been pressure treated as they should be. 2. The purpose of gravel boards is to prevent the movement of soil from one side of the fence to the other but this not essential and I did not bother on the last fence job I did after a chat with...

    Wood flooring choices

Egineered wood can look rather nice. Did our hall with it a few years ago. Prices can vary a lot so an hour's searching is advised.

    Filling small dents/holes in plasterboard

Wickes do tubs of "ready mixed plaster skim" which I have used successfully in the recent past.

    Downlights insulation

Forget it, we bought a house with wretched downlights installed and on a windy day in winter the heating has to keep going to cope with the cold draughts. The house is now for sale but if we were staying I would get rid of the lot, it's just a fashion.

    Stock market dealing

The problem with all this kind of activity is that it is totally unpredictable irrespective of "doing the homework", i.e. it is not investing it is gambling. People like Warren Buffet do not do it for that very reason.

    Stinky water in water butts

Local farmer often spreads very smelly stuff on his land - guess he knows what's what.

    Stock market dealing

I have been doing it for years using LSE run by Jarvis Investment Management. No annual or ISA fees and £10 transaction fees. They also give you a lot of useful data for free. Last year my portfolio income was around 7.5% yield - try and get that from a bank or building society but of course you...

    Polythene sheet garden office roof

Alec_t is probably right but you could use polycarbonate sheet which is quite tough and lets in lots of light.

    Radiator paint

The point of using "radiator enamel" is that it will cope with constant heating and cooling without cracking/flaking. Yes gloss can be used on metal but not necessarily designed to cope with frequent heat stress.

    EPDM for summer house

Why do you want to do EPDM ? For a summer house I would use some of that corrugated onduline stuff that Wickes sells (£13/squ m) which in my experience is quite robust and good for many years.

Wallpaper removal: Have I removed too much?

Tend to agree with OS, you might even try using some Wickes ready mixed plaster and skim repair as I have done in the past successfully.

    Safety shoes? U-Power?

Got my last pair from Lidl and they lasted years. Have just got a new pair from shoezone, cos Lidl didn't have any at the time.
