    Coax, CAT5e & 2.5mm T&E in the same chase

So different PVC conduits, same chase, is OK then? (From a safety / regs point of view)

SWA, sockets, and freedom from RCDs

I was also thinking along similar lines, I have access to tons of flexshield-type braided cable at work, and as you say a nail going through that would hit the earthed braid before it hit any conductor. I know that flexshield was acceptable for running outside of safe zones under the 16th...

    MCB 32A TRIPPING

Oh well, you had a good crack at it. What you did wasn't rocket science, but as the problem now appears to be slightly more rocket sciencey than a loose wire, it's time to get a spark in to check it out. Good luck. PS. Leave that circuit isolated until it is fixed!

    PAT testing a new computer

Woooooosssshhhhhh! That's the sound of my rather obvious joke going right over your head. I was going to write "UKIP party", but I thought I'd make it even more obvious by repeating not just the last but the last two words of the acronym, but obviously this wasn't obvious enough! :) Fair...

    MCB 32A TRIPPING

OK, I give up. I have tried to be amicable with you Martin, but you insist on being as smarmy and condescending as possible. I appreciate you have a living to earn, and jobs like this are your bread and butter. The guy asked for practical DIY advice for what could be a simple problem...

    MCB 32A TRIPPING

Martin, I did not take umbridge at you advising the OP to test for dead. I'm not sure where you have got that idea from. As you mention, I always advise people to test for dead myself. Whilst I would like to think it is common sense to do so, we all know that common sense is not common...

    MCB 32A TRIPPING

OK, fair enough. I think what irked me was the 'just to be clear' bit, as I interpereted it as "if the bloke is dead who will get sued?". Sorry if that was not the intended meaning.

    PAT testing a new computer

"Please enter you PIN" It's simple! That's the whole point of an acronym; to save having to say or write the whole phrase. This is partially defeated by repeating the last word as in "PAT testing". It is an affront to the English language (why did you write 'English' in capitals?) because...

    Lighting circuit - Earth Problem?

So the lighting cable from your flat down to the CU has an earth in it, but this conductor has not been connected at the CU and cut so short that it can't be? What kind of idiot would do that? How old is the buidling / wiring? If there's a main earth terminal in the basement, then at least...

    PAT testing a new computer

What on earth are you talking about? In what way could my comments possibly be seen as 'trying to justify (anything) for my own means'? All I was saying is that the phrase 'PAT testing' is an affront to the English language, along with all forms of redundant acronyms such as; "ABS system"...

    MCB 32A TRIPPING

I agree of course that testing for dead is essential, and I would like to think that anyone with half a brain would know that. What I don't agree with is that you need a qualified electrician £££££ to unscrew an isolated and dead-tested socket from the wall and have a look behind it. It is...

    Lighting circuit - Earth Problem?

When you say that there's no earth connection to the CU, do you mean that there's no CPC (earth wire) in the cable coming from the CU, or that it's just not connected? What type of cable is it? Do you have a 4mm^2 (or bigger) earth cable coming in to your flat for main bonding to water/gas...

    Lighting circuit - Earth Problem?

Isolate the lighting circuit and check for dead, then check for any voltage at the light fitting between earth and live, and earth and neutral. If this is OK (no volts) then get a long piece of wire and connect it to your main earth terminal at your consumer unit, then use this 'extension...

Bathroom timed extractor fan wiring question

OK, I see. I thought it was normal practice to install extractor fans powered from a RFC, but switched by the lighting switched live. In fact I was going to start a thread asking this; does that constitute a borrowed nuetral and how would it affect the RCDs (assuming the circuits were on...

    MCB 32A TRIPPING

As there's no RCD this could also be a live-to-earth fault. 32A running in your CPC is NOT a good thing. LEAVE THAT BREAKER OFF UNTIL YOU FIX THE PROBLEM. Having this circuit off may be an inconvenience, but not as inconvenient as a burnt down house! Peace.

    MCB 32A TRIPPING

Is this circuit RCD protected? Take the socket in question off and see if you can see anything untoward (with the power off of course!) As has been said, if it's tripping; it's tripping for a reason! Don't just keep putting it back on!
