    PAT testing a new computer

What is Portable Appliance Testing testing? Is this where you test the test instrument prior to testing the portable appliances? Or is it just an example of Redundant Acronym Syndrome? (Or RAS syndrome if you prefer :) )

Bathroom timed extractor fan wiring question

Erm, why can't he power the fan from the old heater supply, and take only the switched live from the light?

SWA, sockets, and freedom from RCDs

Ah well, I'm still toying with the idea of a non RCD radial, it'll depend on how easy it will be to fit a steel conduit for the CU drop... I'm glad it's sparked (sorry) some debate about the regs though. I know there have to be rules, but I can see why people get ****ed off with some of...

SWA, sockets, and freedom from RCDs

If I was going to use the SWA (which I'm not going to bother with anymore), I would have fitted a gland and secured an earth banjo with the locknut, but just left the gland 'floating' (but secured to the wall to stop it moving about). It's all irrelevant now as I'm ditching this daft idea...

SWA, sockets, and freedom from RCDs

Hmmmm, OK, I don't think I'll bother. Now I'm awake I've realised I'd probably have to hack out quite a trench in the wall to get the SWA in anyway (so if I was determined to get RCD free I may as well just bury the T+E 50mm deep). I'm not particularly concerned about the kitchen power...

SWA, sockets, and freedom from RCDs

Whilst trying to get to sleep I (unfortunately) began thinking about running an unRCDed radial for my fridgefreezer and boiler (when I renovate my flat). I have some 4mm^2 SWA 3core kicking about, but not much. I am thinking about using the SWA for the drop from CU to floor as this will be...

    Mixing Two-Core and Three-Core ?

Erm, why not just put a plug on your new light and use a double-adapter to plug them both in to your timer?

What does "separately electrically protected" mean

In the context of smoke alarms, separate from what? I like the idea of running smoke alarms from the lighting circuit (so it's obvious if the circuit has tripped), I will be using grade D (with battery backup) alarms; the regs say that they can be connected to "a separately electrically...

Does my new split-load CU plan sound OK (RCD + RCBO)?

Thanks for your excellent detailed reply Mikhail! I will definitely fit a mains powered smoke alarm then - I have a couple of options if I can't get access to above the ceiling. 1) Mount it on a wall, right up against the ceiling. If they have to be ceiling mounted to work properly (do...

Does my new split-load CU plan sound OK (RCD + RCBO)?

The 2391 course was a while ago, and as I said I've never 'used' it. I do not consider myself a domestic spark, that's why I'm asking questions here. I will look in to mains powered smoke alarms, although with it being a flat access to wiring above the ceiling is difficult. I am also in...

Vaillant EcoTec Pro 28 - good choice for a 2-bed flat?

Hmmm, most of the posts I've read are singing the praises of Vaillant boilers... :? I am planning on sticking with an electric shower, but would consider running a shower from the Combi if it was up to the job - the specs are CH output 28kW DHW flow rate 11.5L/min Kev, from what I...

Vaillant EcoTec Pro 28 - good choice for a 2-bed flat?

Hi, I'm going to be renovating my flat next year, so I'm just trying to scope out and price up the main things I'll need. From speaking to people and reading forums (fora?) like this I'm leaning towards a Vaillant combi, would the EcoTec Pro 28 be a good bet for my 2-bed flat (6 rads...

Incidentally, if anyone would like some custom pens made to promote your business, why not try Pen Island. Their website is http://www.penisland.net I am not joking, this is genuine and completely SFW!

Does my new split-load CU plan sound OK (RCD + RCBO)?

That's another thing I was going to ask - all the CUs come with a 100A incomer, but I'm not sure what my supply is rated at (I'm away at the moment so I can't check), it may well be 80A or even 60A, although that said, they (the electricity board) replaced the supply to the flats a couple of...

Does my new split-load CU plan sound OK (RCD + RCBO)?

OK, OK, I think you've convinced me! Here's a Wylex 10-way dual RCD CU for £58, with MCBs at £2.88. I think I will go with that. That also gives me the option of having two lighting circuits, arghhh! So, a Wylex dual RCD CU, with; RCD-1: 32A main ring 40A shower 6A possible...

Does my new split-load CU plan sound OK (RCD + RCBO)?

Thanks for the link, I'll read through the PDF later... I am going to completely rewire the flat and fit a new CU, although the lighting circuits may have to stay as they are (I can't just pop upstairs and rip up the floorboards!) - if the cables are in conduit I may look at pulling new ones...

Does my new split-load CU plan sound OK (RCD + RCBO)?

I don't think a separate radial for Kitchen appliances is needed as the kitchen will be on it's own 32A ring. I'm in Scotland so part-p is not an issue. Although I have passed 2391, I don't think I can certify the work myself as I'm not a member of any trade associations. I should be...

Does my new split-load CU plan sound OK (RCD + RCBO)?

Thanks for the replies! I do indeed cook on gas, but I am planning running a cable from the CU to the kitchen for future use. Does a cooker HAVE to have local isolation? If so I will mount a CCU and run the cable to it. So Chint are not the way forward - cheers! :) Can anyone...

Does my new split-load CU plan sound OK (RCD + RCBO)?

Hello hello, Next year I will be renovating my 2 bedroom flat, I am just starting to get my ideas together and start pricing things up, so I thought I'd check that I'm on the right track. (I am an industrial controls/instrument tech by trade, I have passed 16th Edition and G&G 2391, but...

    Combined fused spur and socket?

There will be two 60w lamps, and a couple of sockets (which will have nothing more demanding than basic power-tools plugged in to them). A 13A supply will be plenty. I am using 2.5mm^2 SWA cable, the run will be about 30m. It will be secured to a brick wall. The house has a TNC-S supply...
