If you cant attach anything across the rear, then I would use a nice sized piece of angle iron on the front bolted through to two large plates/washers each side of the join (four bolts in total). Unless it is loose, I doubt you would pull the timbers back together - you are just stopping...

it's could be the bleeding of the towel rail that is causing the pressure loss. Do you have any corrosion inhibitor in the central heating?

Definitely sounds like the diverter valve. My boiler does it too. I have proved this by removing the actuator head and wiggling the diverter pin. I can change the pitch of the whistling, and make it stop all together by doing this.

the t-con board is under the arrowed metal plate. replacing is fairly straighforward, but you have to be careful with the zif connectors as they are easily broken. Have a read up on zif connectors on google.

That looks like a plume diverter kit. Installed a bit strangely though. Is there a parallel wall opposite yours with the flue within a couple of metres? Not sure about the clicking, does sound like it could be expansion/contraction noises. When the boiler comes on, does the clicking start...
