"Savings" calculation for solar PV with storage batteries?

It’s an 8kw Solar PV system with 2 6.5kwh battery units.

"Savings" calculation for solar PV with storage batteries?

Another thing to consider with battery storage (at least with ours) is that we benefit from economy 7. If the batteries are not fully charged during the lower light winter days, we can charge the batteries overnight using the lower rate economy 7 electricity and then use the battery and solar in...

    Extraction fan in bathroom

In my opinion, the only type of extract fan that is really worth fitting are the inline duct fans that move circa 300m3 of air an hour. just fitted this one and it works fantastically. The previous fan like yours did little to remove any condense from the room...

Change internal (for outside light) single switch to a double switch for external cctv camera

I mean, it’s not against any of the BS7671 regs, infact there is a reg which states that you may infact do this. I have done it myself numerous times, but I always offer the option of utilising a 5 amp 3 pin plug and socket as opposed to a 13 amp socket. This completely helps in preventing any...

    Balancing question

You think the design of gas fired central heating is a problem…just wait until the heat pump takes dominance. Jesus Christ wept. Totally agree. There are very few boiler installers and heating fitters who actually take the time to calculate the proper requirements, radiator sizes etc. Part of...

    Balancing question

There is no point having a condensing boiler if the system isn’t to be balanced - is yours a condensing type? When I balance a system, I refer to the boiler manual and attempt to balance so that the recommended temperature differential (referred to as “Delta T”) across the flow and return is...

    (Another) leaking rad valve question

When you undo that nut, you will spring a leak at leak point 2 and 1 unless the system is empty. i successfully applied ptfe tape to the threads on the stuffing gland on the twin entry valves at my old house but did it with the system empty of course. This lasted me until I replaced the valves...

Keeping boiler return temp lower as TRV’s close down

Got a feeling that the installers left it on 18kw range. Time for gas man. Can’t run pump any lower as the run is long and the last rads don’t get good flow on setting 1.

Keeping boiler return temp lower as TRV’s close down

well this thread turned into something else LOL! just going back for a minute to my issue, what do you think the likely cause of the rising return temp the longer the boiler runs for? Even on its lowest modulation percentage. If it’s something i need to get the gas man out for i will do that...

    Changing a circuit breaker

I don’t think advising people to work in that way is a great idea. With none lethal mediums, absolutely. But not with electricity. The fact that he seemingly has no measurement equipment suggests he can’t even check for dead to make sure the main switch is working or that nobody has done the...

    Changing a circuit breaker

Simply swapping supplies over is not the answer nor is it a valid way of fault finding. You need to check for voltage present on the outgoing side of MCB supplying the garage unit in your homes consumer unit and if there is voltage present there - also at the incomer to that garage unit. If...

How to attach thermostat to boiler?

I agree with BlueLoo, or words to that effect. You could even throw in the relevant paragraph from the building regs regarding boiler installation since they’ve now admitted the boiler was installed last year which falls into the post 2018 Regulation update time period (against the law to...

    3 pin socket

If you want to remove it you first need to consider what you’re going to do with the wiring. Simply removing the face plate means that the wires supplying it will still be live. Are you able to disconnect the supply at the fuse box?

    3 pin socket

It’s a 5 amp socket. Usually used (in the past) for powering a low power device or plug in light from the lighting circuit.

Keeping boiler return temp lower as TRV’s close down

A bit like Harry, I have a condensing boiler (all be it a heat only boiler with no internal pump control) with existing controls, all be it “dinosaur age” controls. Simply consists of a wireless room stat, timer and TRV’s. I have no intention or desire to spend hundreds of pounds upgrading the...

Nest thermostat not controlling hot water

With a combi boiler, the hot water is on demand. There is no on and off control. You’re not heating a hot water cylinder. You turn the hot tap on and the boiler turns on and heats the hot water to whatever temp you’ve set the boiler to for hot water. The Nest does not control that and there is...

Keeping boiler return temp lower as TRV’s close down

Strange then, when my TRV’s have closed the radiator down the rad goes cold. So when the radiators go cold once the room has achieved TRV set point, is that not fully turned off? Didn’t know that. Instead of beating about the bush, I’ll just spit it out. i want to reduce my return temp! When...

Keeping boiler return temp lower as TRV’s close down

Surely, with a fixed speed pump, even with the boiler at its lowest modulation percentage, the flow velocity will increase. As a result of this there is less cooling water heat transfer to the surroundings (because radiators have closed down), so the return temp will rise right up to the point...

Keeping boiler return temp lower as TRV’s close down

As in the title - it seems that as TRV heads close down radiators there is less heat transfer available from the boiler cooling water to the house rooms. This in turn leads to a rise in boiler return temperature which ultimately goes above 55 degrees even when the initial delta T upon system...
