double sockets into junction box

A couple of things I'd add... Using junction boxes to extend a ring is now deprecated I believe? If he's actually just running two unfused spurs from that box I'm not sure its a good idea either - with 3 spurs feeding sockets that could take 13A or more, you could easily exceed the 30A rating...

    Spurs from junction box

Robbie, In the situation you are thinking of, you would be better forgetting the junction boxes, and wiring the FCU fused connection units (with switches if you want) directly into the ring. Is the ring circuit you plan to connect these to protected at the main consumer unit with an RCD...

Bosch hob - multiple choice connection!

Ah, I hadn't appreciated that he was installing for a paying customer and not doing his own kitchen... BAS is correct either way in saying that doing it this way is breaking the regulations (unless there is an agreement with the LABC) which sounds unlikely.... Gavin

Bosch hob - multiple choice connection!

Hi Kes, Personally I blame the Government and the Building Control people for doing such a crap job of publicising Part P and what it means. Given that some of the Building Control departments don't even seem to understand the regs, its hardly surprising that there is confusion. The...

    TN-S or TN-C-S?

Thanks for the suggestions. The upstairs shower is 8.5kw, so an isolator is a better idea in the long run I think. Managed to change the CU without a hitch today, so will look for a suitable enclosure and fit something like that photo. Gavin

    TN-S or TN-C-S?

Just about everything about this install is seriously dodgy, but I will eventually get it all sorted out! :D I will fit a 2 module CU to make it a lot easier to fiddle in future. Good idea, but there is a shower upstairs and I *think* its electric It may not be too powerful though...

    TN-S or TN-C-S?

Hi Plugwash - another late bird I see :) Currently the only point of isolation is the DNO cut off fuse. The cable from that is split in a henley block to the lower CU with standard 25mm meter tails, and via 10mm2 cable to the upstairs CU. I did try to buy a rotary isolator from my...

    TN-S or TN-C-S?

Ok, I managed to run some tests yesterday. P- N Loop Impedance at the CU supply was 0.13 Ohm, and P-E connecting directly to the braided earth strap in the pic was 0.17, so I'm taking that as proof that there is a N-E link, although the difference is a little larger than I would expect...

Bonding a bathroom to be tiled

Adam, To be honest I have mixed feelings about this rule... As far as I can see, a properly tightened earth clamp is very unlikely to come undone, like a junction box screw might. I would think the amount of vibration or disturbance that might cause that might well also cause soldered...

Fused spur from ring RCD protected?

Thanks Adam, That confirms what I thought - and yes I did mean to type discrimination  I'm hoping to swap the CU in the next week (already have the unit ready) so it will shortly be sorted. Having seen the mess the fitters made of it though I'm expecting to uncover horrors for...

Fused spur from ring RCD protected?

Me again  Can anyone confirm the following - I can't find anything in the OSG and while I think I know the answer I always like to gain confirmation... Sorting out my mother's kitchen ring, I've discovered that there is a spur running from a single socket behind the washing...

    TN-S or TN-C-S?

The 'grey' cable is actually black I think - it runs from the DNO cutout, to the henley block, then down to the cable armour via the braid. The only other cables leaving the DNO cutout are Phase and Neutral connectors - the main earth for the CU comes from a clamped connection on the cable...

    TN-S or TN-C-S?

Thanks - those replies make sense, though whether it was the DNO or the builders who muffed it up I don't know. It was originally two flats, converted back to a house when my Mum moved in and refurbished, so presumably the DNO came out to remove one meter and did this. The braid is pretty...

    TN-S or TN-C-S?

Sigh, why are the jobs you do for relatives (at no cost) always turn out to be tricky! Having sorted out the broken ring the kitchen fitters left, I'm now looking to replace the CU, and was checking for size, length of cables etc. today, when I noticed this little issue. I had previously...

    extended ring

Paul, As RF says, nothing wrong with it, as long as the switch you mention is a Fused switch unit. It will most likely have a 3 A or 5 A fuse in it, in which case everything downstream of it is protected by that and therefore perfectly safe. Gavin

    extended ring

Paul, I'm a little lost, but I think I understand what you mean. The socket he is connecting to is on the ring right? If he was looking to take a 'ring' from that socket and return to the socket connectors then its certainly incorrect. However, if you mean he will 'break the ring'...

    Home Security Alarms

I can only offer my personal experience - I fitted a Visonic Powermax + system a couple of years ago which offers exactly that service. I now have a sim card built in (so no ties to the home phone) which will call me if there is an alarm, and I can then listen in and/or have a two way...

    cable size calculation

Ah, sorry - these are next week's numbers  http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Technical/Charts/VoltageDrop.html has an even more simplistic calculator. It rather depends why you want to know the calculation - if its a complicated situation it probably needs more sophisication than either of...
