Nominally 6, but it depends how you like your light, direct or indirect (e.g. wallwashing).

Maybe of interest to competent DIYers...

Do you pay your CEng fees through another institution? I'd prefer not to be an MIET (waste of money), but I want to maintain my CEng status. As far as I can see it is not possible to do this unless you are also a member of one of the supporting institutions. If you have found a way to do this...

BAS, I fully accept your point. Perhaps it's the way you worded your post that made me a bit defensive so I appologise if I came across as offensive myself. I'm a realist. I know that we can't give local government all the money they need, so indeed they do have to look carefully at exactly...

GU10 Spots in Place of LV DL

LED lamps can be dimmable but you'll need the right kit and it is not cheap. Whilst they can be quite bright, the colour is harsh on the eyes (IMO) and they are very directional. My guess is that for some sort of work studio they won't meet your needs. Having just tested some 11W CFL...

    LV downlights and Part P

Yes it should apply (on the assumption that SF only sell CE-approved kit) because it is pre-wired. The point is that to be non-notifiable, you must not have to do any wiring connection yourself exept to the existing radial or ring point in the kitchen or special location.

    Experiments with downlights

Nope. Proper dimming is essential for my plan.

Extending a ring few quick questions please

Yes that's correct, although strictly speaking you should measure the earth loop impedance to make sure that this change won't exceed the recommended limit for your incoming supply and protective measures. Also are you 100% sure that it is a ring circuit? If it is then the fact that it is...

Absolutely correct. However one does not need to have a qualification to have the knowledge, and I have simply read up on the wiring regulations. As I noted there is a lot of written description in my document, and what I wrote about the PI would have demonstrated my knowledge to the LABC...

    Experiments with downlights

(I shall ignore all of those who tell me that downlights are a fleeting fashion). I finally got around to testing some lamps as part of my grand design for my lighting system. The design uses a combination of 'more efficient' MR16 halogens and 11W CFL downlighters. First I tried the CFLs...

Any experience with Megaman CFLs? (11W non dimmable GU10)

I finally rigged mine up to see what they are like in my lighting design and was annoyed to find that one would get hot, flicker and then go out. I persisted by switching it off and on again. It would stay on for a while then got out. I nearly gave up but then found that it stayed on for an hour...

Sorry guys, the reason for the late reply is a) I don't usually read the forum at the weekend b) I hadn't expected much interest! To answer the general sentiment of the replies: Firstly, as has been noted, LABCs vary (apparently). So whilst I managed this in my area (West Berks), others...

    LED downlights

I'm doing some testing of lamps myself. I have a 1.8W white GU10 LED lamp and it is like a torch - very directional. Also it has a blueish colour. I intend to use it as a reading light in the bedrooms and my testing verifies that. I agree that whilst LEDs can be great for accent lighting they...

Maybe of interest to competent DIYers...

I am effectively a competent DIYer doing a lot of notifiable work on my house during extension/renovation, including replacing CU, adding new circuits, work in kitchen, bathrooms etc. I have just received a statement from my LABC that since I have demonstated competence (in all aspects of...

    Insulation resistance for periodics

Yes. When the circuit contains electronic devices which cannot be isolated, you have no other choice since the higher voltage applied during the test might cause damage. As to how you go about it - it appears that you already answered your own question!

electrician won't issue electrical installation cert -help?!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is NOT part of HIPS is it? I moved recently and my surveyor put the usual caveat in his report that since he couldn't inspect the electrics and there was no PIR, he had to give the "requires attention" rating. As a buyer I had to decide if I would go ahead...

Want new CU fitted, will old circuits require updating?

It might be worth considering a single section CU and using RCBOs for circuits requiring residual current protection. That way you don't lost power to multiple circuits when there is a fault trip in only one circuit. Yes. I don't think many competent people would do this work without a...

Works done, how can I tell if the notification was done ?

Notifiable work is notified in different ways depending on who does the work. If it is to be done by a person who is not registered with one of the approved self-certification schemes, then the notification needs to be done in advance of the work (and a fee paid to the council). If it is...
