    Soffit Lighting

From approved document P: "The installation of equipment attached to the outside wall of a house (for example security lighting, ...) is not notifiable provided that there are no exposed outdoor connections etc" (where 'etc' is the usual caveat about not being a new cct/ in a...

DIYer wanting to learn - would it be worthwhile?

OK so we are in the same situation. I too have an electronics degree from the early 90's. I also got an HNC in electronics before that. Both covered a fair bit of electrical engineering as well as electronics. I also worked in various engineering jobs in various industries. I have also...

    Wrong Polarity??????

Actually there IS such thing as a "voltage", but indeed it is inherently a potential difference. Consider the SI definition: A volt is the potential difference across a conductor when a current of one ampere dissipates one watt of power.

    sockets are all spurs!!?

I didn't think that any professional electrician would wire a socket as a spur from a JB that was concealed below the floor until I found out that's exactly what has been done several times in my house! The golden rule in your case is: If you cannot be certain of the safety of the existing...

DIYer wanting to learn - would it be worthwhile?

jpdw My situation is different from yours but it may help. I am currently having an extension built and lots of internal alterations. I decided to do the electrical work myself partly to save cost but mainly because there's a lot to do and if I do it myself then it'll be how I want it. Also I...

All-RCBO CU: Any circuits that shouldn't be on an RCBO?

Thanks John. I guess my concept of all-RCBO came from reading the discussion about the 17th Ed, that's all. I still quite like the idea of having an RCBO per circuit instead of a split CU, but I think I'll just put the rings on RCBOs now. I haven't looked into buying my new CU yet. If I'm...

    Cat5e Home Network

Hey! Have you been spying on me! I have to admit I'm an idiot over tools. I try to manage without the right tool on account of the fact that I only intend to do the job a few times and so its not worth the price. I really should have bought a cable puller years ago. Thanks a lot for the...

    Linking smoke detectors

Seems to me the obvious solution is to use 3-core & earth lighting cable and use the third core as the linking signal. Is this the way it's normally done?

    Chasing lighting cables into wall

That's good to know - I was worrying about having to put capping over my new wiring. I'm not sure if I'll be doing my own 'filling' or not, as I'll be having a plasterer in to do some work anyway. Opening up a channel wide enough for capping seems a pain. What's the best alternative - oval...

All-RCBO CU: Any circuits that shouldn't be on an RCBO?

Thanks John. I'm not so worried about the immersion heater as we never use it unless the boiler breaks (not happened yet). What about cookers then? Can you confirm that modern cookers will start to leak after a few years? I have looked for the fish tank but can't find it. I guess we...

GU10 downlighter fittings with CFL lamps

I don't know which, but looking at the DorS system they advertise it appears that in order to get the required level of dimming it is necessary to apply full power then remove it and reapply it within a specific time period. Actually I think the system I am planning (FlexiDim) can do this, but I...

All-RCBO CU: Any circuits that shouldn't be on an RCBO?

It's been a few weeks since there were some 17th ed. discussions and I asked if it was maybe a good idea to fit an all-RCBO CU. Now I just read on another thread someone suggesting that smoke detectors should not be on an RCD circuit. Now I have heard that cookers can be leaky and trip RCD...

Correct process for Part P certification

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. The point I'm trying to make is that unless you specifically tell the LABC that the electrical work will be done by a non-registered person (and therefore requires pre-notification), then they will likely assume that the work is to be done by a registered...

The modern way to scare an apprentice is to get him to post a question on this forum, right?

GU10 downlighter fittings with CFL lamps

Thanks! Unfortunately the Megaman dimmable won't work the the lighting control system I intend to use.

GU10 downlighter fittings with CFL lamps

Thanks. Yes I appreciate what you are saying. My plan is to have downlighters to cover the entire room, but use a combination of energy-efficient (relatively speaking) halogens and CFL downlighters. This is so that I can have the low level dimming capability of halogens but when I want a bright...

Correct process for Part P certification

Its not the payment that counts, its the notification. Presumably the electrician/contractor was registered and therefore not obligated to provide pre-notification.

GU10 downlighter fittings with CFL lamps

Thanks for the answers. One more question, this time on brightness. I have one CFL (standard ES fitting) and it is 7W. IMO the brightness is significantly less than a 40W incendescent lamp. I have read that a 9W will be about as bright as a 40W incendescent and a 11W CFL about as bright as a 60W...

Correct process for Part P certification

You'll need to find an electrical contractor who will take over the work and certify it for you. This may mean that they'll want to do extra work to inspect the work so far before they'll take it on.

    New self install

Presumably the fees are standard? However know that council tax varies according to where you live so maybe the BC fees do too? Where I live my council has the fees listed on their website. Don't forget that it's just three fees for all the work (planning, BC approval and then BC inspection)...
