    Fixing creaky chipboard flooring

The upstairs of my house has creaky flooring. The house is only about 15 years old so the floor is made of sheets of tongue-and-groove chipboard, nailed to the joists. The stud walls are built on top, so pulling up the floor would be a nightmare. I have had advice (from a builder and...

Downlighting - construction and wiring of new ceiling

I'm in the process of planning new lighting for my own house so I might be able to provide some useful comment. My first reaction is that 1120W (or more) is one hell of a lot of power for a 22m2 room! That's about the same size as my lounge, into which I am intending to install only about...

Silicon high temperature cable for ELV halogen lighting

I'm still planning, but I'm thinking of fitting 20W or 35W halogen downlights in groups of three from appropriately rated transformers. I think I might need to have up to 2m runs from the transformer to each light, or maybe more. So whilst 1mm2 should be enough, it might be worth going to 1.5mm2...

GU10 downlighter fittings with CFL lamps

I see that 7W CFL GU10 lamps are 58 mm long, and GU10 halogens are between 50 and 58 mm long. Can I assume that the CFL lamp will fit into any GU10 downlighter fitting even thought it it advertised as a 'halogen' fitting? Also, since the 11W CFL GU10 lamps are around 75 mm long does this mean...

Silicon high temperature cable for ELV halogen lighting

The manufacturer of the lighting control system I intend to use recommended it.

Silicon high temperature cable for ELV halogen lighting

Where can I buy some? Looked at places like TLC Direct but can't seem to find any.

    Flush Ceiling Lights

Just checking - is this a first floor bathroom where the "ceiling void" is actually the loft which can be accessed? If so a JB is allowed because it will be accessible for inspection.

    Cat5e Home Network

Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure what cable rods are, although I can imagine. Can you name a suitable supplier (or better still a web-link)? Are you suggesting that I run cable to the switch-plates just in case? I'm not sure why you suggest this. And is your comment that it must be...

    New security system - planning

Thanks. I'll think about mixing shock sensors and PIRs. My point about ethernet is that I will be installing a network in my house and my programmable lighting system will be on it, so it would be handy to have an alarm panel that could sit on it too. Regarding the purpose of alarms I think...

    New security system - planning

I need to start thinking about what I need to do for my new security system. The ceilings are down so I can run whatever cables I need. I am a bit anti-PIRs, having had false alarms with any PIR-based alarms that I've had. Plus we have cats (not the reason for the false alarms by the way)...

    Cat5e Home Network

Sorry to hijack akewt's thread, but this seems a good oportunity for me to ask my own questions. Since I have my ground floor ceilings down at the moment (partly because the artex was cr*p, and partly because I'm putting in a lighting control system), I too have the opportunity to put in some...

    Regs on accessibility

When I inspected and tested my wiring, I found two socket spurs that I could not find corresponding connections for. Now that my builder has started pulling down ceilings, I have found them: Two JBs on the ring. These JBs were in the void above the ceiling, and the floor above is...

    Cat5e Home Network

DanAir, can you explain further about what you mean about the complexity of shielding? I too would like to add some Cat5e cabling in my house and I am worried about not only the effect of mains wiring (it would be impossible to keep them entirely separate), but also the radiation from lighting...

    Shower pump

You need to check the loading on the circuit you intend to tap into, and the current rating of the pump. If you overload the circuit then the protection on it (fuse, MCB whatever) will trip. Hence your original assumption and ricicle's advice.

    Halogens - LV or mains?

I'm going to fit a programmable lighting control system so I won't have conventional light switches, so those Megaman dimmable CFLs aren't any good for me. The system can do FL dimming using 1-10V and a suitable ballast, but I've heard too many negative views about these systems (like level of...

    Halogens - LV or mains?

Having done some research into this area, it appears to me that the technology advancements are in LV halogens instead of the mains voltage ones. For example the Philips Masterline ES (more) energy efficient lamp seems to be only available at 12V. Is this true? I can't bring myself to go to...

How does halogen compare to conventional 60W

Not that I really care about fashion (as you could tell if you saw my clothes), but I have to agree with Pensdown - there is so much downlighting being put in new builds and as alterations that those who are against them seem to be in the minority.

    robin 1610

I have one I bought from e-bay for £120. I got it calibrated not long ago during a ELP calibration day - cost me about £30 plus VAT I think. I was lucky - the test results showed that it was already very accurate. I had feared that they guy was going to tell me it was out of calibration and...

Showerforce Easiboost (1.5 bar) shower pump - wiring

Refer to the actual specs of the pump for what protection it needs, not what you read on a forum! You'll also need to trace the shower circuit - don't just assume that it comes from an FCU.
