    Earth for gas meter question

Equipotential Bonding as a definition is a good starting point. Is the copper pipework within this installation, when fed into the equipotential zone via an all insulated plastic pipe either an exposed conductive part or an extraneous conductive part? I know the answer would be no to both...

    Earth for gas meter question

'An insulating section' - the whole lot entering is insulated and cannot introduce a potential thus is not extraneous. 411.3.1.2 In each installation main protective bonding conductors complying with Chapter 54 shall connect to the main earthing terminal extraneous-conductive-parts...

Strajge wiring on lighting in Kitchen

Nothing to do with this topic but introduce another two colours - brown and blue and see where we could end up? It's bad enough with just red and black for some people. Sorry and now back to topic!

    Earth for gas meter question

If it's plastic and contains gas then it can't introduce a potential within the equipotential zone (your four walls) from outside. In that case it's not extraneous (verified by having a resistance of more than 23Kohms between the pipe and MET) so no bonding required.p

Can I use a light switch as a cut off for a spur?

It's possible to change your current switch plate to a grid system with two modules. One would replace your current switch, either 6A or 10A and the other would be a 20A double pole switch to isolate your socket. A low level switched fused spur would make things easier though.

Strajge wiring on lighting in Kitchen

The black insulated conductor that had red tape on it was the switched line and should be connected to the terminal marked as L. The other black conductor goes to the terminal marked as N. The two reds are connected together and not the any of the L, N or E terminals of your light fitting...

Suitably sized SWA run externally isn't a problem.

    wiring colours in new extension

I'll probably regret that! Lol Seriously though, BC will probably want the installation to comply with BS7671 without any departures as they just complicate things for people who can't think outside of the box.

    wiring colours in new extension

120.3 - Any intended departure from these Parts requires special consideration by the designer of the installation and shall be noted on the Electrical Installation Certificate specified in Part 6. The resulting degree of safety of the installation shall be not less than that obtained by...

    wiring colours in new extension

They'll read directly from a book, apply no common sense as they're mostly incapable of thinking outside of the box then tell you that it MUST be brown/blue. I'd bet my house on it!

    wiring colours in new extension

You have to ask yourself what constitutes the biggest danger or confusion to a general DIY'er who decides to carry out future work on an installation: 1 - Extending existing circuits wired in red/black insulated conductors with red/black insulated conductors. 2 - Extending existing...

I also would only use harmonised colours but just looking at it from an alternative perspective.

    wiring colours in new extension

No regs book with me at the minute but I'd be happy to list it as a deviation which doesn't compromise safety of the installation. BS7671 isn't a book of statutory rules, it's a guide to aid compliance with the Electricity At Work Regulations. I doubt using black and red conductors would bring...

    wiring colours in new extension

Not that I've done it but I'd love to see anybody argue against the use of left over red/black coloured cable, especially when matching into an existing red/black installation. As long as it's listed as a departure from BS7671 on the EIC and the installation isn't compromised from a safety...

1960s house rose to 4 spots help please

Downlights are installed for ascetic reasons as well, not just to make a room brighter. You obviously don't agree with that but many people do this on a daily basis and there's nothing at all wrong with that if that's what they want. It's not like he's going to be fitting 50W halogen lamps as...

It's not, the only thing that sounds bad is a broken record.
