Plastic vs. copper in central heating

Checked the Hepworth data. The head loss is about 3 times as much for plastic as for the copper data I have for 10mm pipe. In fact, the figures for 10mm Hep20 are almost the same as that for 8mm copper (with .6mm wall thickness). The lesson is, don't connect a large radiator with a long...

Plastic vs. copper in central heating

Thanks for the info. I take it you're not a fan of plastic then!?

    Radiator sizes

How big is the landing (including the stair well)? How big is the radiator (width and height)? Is it really 8 foot - that sounds huge. Is there a reason for changing it other than that its too hot? You could just stick a rad-valve on it set to 18C if that were the reason.

Plastic vs. copper in central heating

Is the flow resistance of plastic pipes the same as copper or not? Would a 10mm plastic pipe have the same internal dimensions as a 10mm copper pipe? I can't find any data sheets for plastic on the web.

two pipe central heating loop layout.

 In that case, I hope I correctly understood your layout and haven't misled you.

two pipe central heating loop layout.

Simple answer is yes. All things being equal, there would actually be more flow in the first radiator rather than the last. You then have to balance the system to get the right amount of water going to each radiator. There are references as to how to do this on these forums.

two pipe central heating loop layout.

If you connect the flow and return together, without a radiator in between, then the water will go straight along the main pipe and won't bother going through the radiators!

New Radiator not heating up please help?

By the sounds of it, the system ought to cope with your 600x600 (double panel?) radiator if it previously coped with a 600x1000 single panel. What happens if you turn off the bigger of the two radiators? Are you sure that it was fine with the previous radiator? Basically, the bigger the...

New Radiator not heating up please help?

Is there any 8mm pipe left between the radiators and the boiler (it wasn't clear from your post whether you'd replaced all of it or just some of it). I've had trouble balancing a system where I have a 1.8kW radiator (about the same as your 600mm X 1000mm double panel one I'd guess) on a 6...

need a new boiler, where do I begin?

I had a Worcester Bosch 24Cdi and filling a bath took ages. I now have a standard gas boiler with a Megaflo cylinder which is very well insulated - it will stay hot enough for a shower for at least 3 days. Its pressurised, so you get a powerful shower and it takes about 30 seconds to fill a...

two pipe central heating loop layout.

The loop looks pretty standard, not sure what you are considering as an alternative. A 22mm pipe seems large for 2 radiators. Unless the furthest radiators on the loop are very large (more than 2kW) advice is that the water flow rate will be too slow allowing potential build up of sludge in...

    No CH but Got HW

This message is to offer my solidarity with you more than being advice. I rented a house with the opposite problem (no hot water). The landlord said he'd never had a problem. Magically, whenever the engineer attended, it would start to work. Eventually we twigged that the hot water didn't...

    Tricky CH balancing problem

Problem is the thermostat is near the front door! I'm also getting system resets as soon as the boiler comes on even when two or three of the radiators are still on. Can these be caused by the pump being overloaded?

    Tricky CH balancing problem

I have a problem with balancing the largest radiator in my house (which is in the coldest room). It is a 1.8kW radiator. The other 15 radiators are between 0.3kW and 0.8kW. When the system was installed the drop was 25C (and the room was very cold). The best I can get is a 16C drop (with its...
