Header size for load bearing timber wall

I've doubled up smaller timbers on loft conversions to take the roof but i can't quote sizes as i don't have them in front of me . Box beams will also a very heavy load but then all this is worked out before i get the plans . I assume you are not working to plans ?

Best adhesive for MDF skirting and Architrave

Why ignore the best way to fit a skirting board ? 2"NO10 with Rawlplugs and the heads countersunk . No glue needed . If you are staining the timber then make some timber plugs to fill the holes . It's your house , why bodge it ?

wood worm and wet rot in loft

Interesting , have you seen the longhorn ? I found what looked like small cigar stubs when i removed a window in Surbiton and saw the massive damage it did to the woodwork . I have never seen anything like it ! I begged the customer to get a pro opinion but he wasn't interested as he was abroad...

wood worm and wet rot in loft

Some good points but from the picture you can see the frass from the flight holes . I doubt that has been there for a hundred years . The flight holes are an indication that the beetle has left that part of timber , this doesn't mean it has left the area , it more than likely has flown to the...

wood worm and wet rot in loft

Well it's either the pixies drilling lot's of 1mm holes or he has woodworm . Quite a serious attack looking at the amount of flight holes . The wet rot doesn't look to bad and i think solving the problem ( a broken tile ?) and a chemical treatment will stop any spread of the rot . The wood worm...

Help with dado rail on stairs please[pics show layout]

It's up to you but to return it on itself you will have to level out the dado like Al said . So a 4" level part at the bottom , that's just what i think looks good .

Help with dado rail on stairs please[pics show layout]

Also rather than taking the dado down onto the bottom newel return it on itself like you have on the cornice . Straighten it out first like Al says 4" and then return it .

Almost there , if you over lap your top and bottom marks then join them up you will have your angle .

    Continuous Handrail (Stairs)

Fitting a volute on a staircase that was not made to take a volute = Nightmare ! A Volute has the the newel and spindles to support it , if there is no bullnosed last tread to support the newel then you need to lift up the floorboards and try and support it on a joist . IMHO it does not work ...

Step - Is a bullnose required???

The bullnose is not there for the carpet alone . The bullnose is the run of the stairs , if your step leads onto a landing that is then followed by a staircase then removing it could cause a trip hazzard . Odd i know but if you have walked up 12 steps and expect the next one to be there you...
