I have no idea, but don’t think it was. I’ve only been in the house last 6years. That was done well before my time. Will take a closer look on weekend when I get the ladders out, but looks to be either a T lintel or a plate. Having a look at the paint in daylight around the whole house it does...

Thanks for confirming I had plans to renovate the house but these are on hold due to funds going elsewhere unexpectedly. For now I’ll take a look at the render in the weekend providing it’s dry. If all looks ok and just blistered paint, would it be worth repainting in a breathable paint?

Yes the render is old but doesn’t seem blown, I’ll need to get up to check closer when the weather is dryer. I need to check the tiles abutting the render, not sure if there is lead flashing behind…been like this for a long time before I brought the place and not caused any issues but may need...

Update: fire back removed…..I lost a few half bricks on the left side which I’ll replace as I brick up the opening to the required size given

I’ve fitted the lintel and tried to tie in the bricks above the fire back that were sticking out. This means there’s a half brick to the rear unsupported if the fireback was to be removed. I’ve attached a picture prior to mixing up the muck. Currently a 100mm bearing each side, but this will...

Thanks. Could turn into a pig of a job. If the bricks drop, above lintel area, no way of putting them back in. Any suggestions on where to go from here? Think I’ll fit the lintel tomorrow, at least the face will be supported as removing timber frame
