    Plasterboarding a house

Hi all, I've completely stripped all the plaster from the walls in my living room and will be doing the ceiling next. Someone suggested that I should use plaster boards for both and that by using plasterboards for all the walls would also help with insulation and keep the cost down as they...

    Loft Conversion

I was equiring about a loft conversion and had a structural engineer look at it, I have 2 17.5" joists in place (holding the roof) at the mo and was advised that replacing them with RSJs would be required but also give more overall space as they would be a lot smaller than the current joists.

Home Cinema / Games Room Underground

nice one guys, I found another company that specialise in this type of work (www.basementforce.co.uk) I figure from what I've read and what I'd like that it would cost around 100,000 - 150,000 :!:  well it was a nice thought but I'll leave it there...

ah...well spotted Nige, I was thinking that's what you were talking about

    Heat not being disbursed evenly

ah.....I think that the pressure valve I mentioned is actually the valve that lets cold water back into the system so turning this (if I'm on the right tracks) would fill up all the tanks again (e.g. after one was removed) thus increasing the pressure...does that sound right? Now the...

    Heat not being disbursed evenly

is that the same as the driving limit in the uk being 70 miles an hour but cars going 100 miles an hour? Sorry to be facetious... The meter dial does go up to 4 so I was just gauging it on this... If what you're saying is right, and that the pressure is a *little* high, would I therefore...

    Mortar Mix Calculations?

nice one Thermo that's just the job...would it be worth adding that link to a sticky? If not, It would seem that the calculation is: z x 54.5 (sand) z x 15.5 (cement) (z being the number of square meters)

    Heat not being disbursed evenly

Thanks guys The elbow test  well not quite my elbow but I put my hand on each rad and it's very clear that some are hotter than others, hence more heat being outputted... Of course I know what I'm doing... When I had the system installed, the (qualified) plumber...

Home Cinema / Games Room Underground

yeah damp seems to be the biggest problem that I've seen here where people have converted existings cellars. Also this is a third generation house, my nan was the second owner and although I never saw it in it's original state, I have seen quite a few changes while she had it and then my mum and...

original footings.... Nige as I'm sure you've guessed from my other posts I haven't a lue when it comes to building, so I'm not sure what you're talking about. I know the house has to have fondations, this I assumed to be (for want of beter words) a big thick slab of concrete (and...

    Heat not being disbursed evenly

hi, I have noticed that my central heating doesn't seem to be disbursing heat evenly around my rads. Here's a breakdown of the system, - All rads are 60 cm high - All upstairs rads are single convector - Thermostat is at top of stairs in hall - The living area is open plan - All...

Home Cinema / Games Room Underground

hey all, I kid you not when I say I'm a long way away from starting this project, if at all I will start it, however I would like to find out if what I'm thinking of would be possible. I live in a semi-detached 3 bedroom house that was built around 60-70 years ago. Roughly two thirds of...

nice one for the link Bazdaa, I'll look out for them... electrics is something I may have a go at later, but A. I have a lot of building / plumbing to get through first B. I thought electrics were a bit of a no go due to recent legislation. Cheers Nige, I'll be getting most of the stuff...

    Mortar Mix Calculations?

I now know that I either need to make a mix of sand and cement (5-1) to rebuild an internal wall around a door way or buy ready mixed mortar. I believe that a combination of using an SDS and Sledge Hammer (14lb) will be fine for taking out the current brick work. I will have approximatley...

ok cool, the ready mix seems like a good option especially as I don't have a mixer or would I still need one? I guess I could hire a mixer without to much trouble.

cost primarily :) as I've just bought the house I would also like to get my hands dirty and do as much of the work myself. I was quoted £3000 and that didn't include the fabricated steel that's required and this is way out of my budget. I haven't had a qoute for the steel but from...
